Talk about opening a can of worms... the naming of cartridges can be the most confusing thing in the world. Usually the name of the cartridge tells you the diameter. Sometimes in inches, sometimes in millimeters. Then you have the odd ones like the 30-06. It's a 30 caliber that became the cartridge of the US military in 1906. Or, the 45-70, which is a 45 caliber that held 70 grains of black powder. Then you have the 7-08.... a 7mm (or .284 diameter) that used the 308 cartridge case as the "parent" case.
It can get confusing, but it's fun to learn....
I have a rare breed of a 25-284.
LOL! Actually it’s nothing more than a hot 25-06. It’s like all others it can be loaded up or down so it fits from 257 Bob to the 257 Weatherby. For varmint hunting in the next state, without leaving home!

I think I saw that write-up. I think they may have mentioned that it was slightly over-bore.There was a humorous write-up in one of older reloading books about wildcat rounds, with pictures. One that was quite cute, was a 50 BMG case, necked down and loaded with a 22 caliber bullet!

I didn't know they still made .284 brass. I always liked the concept of that cartridge, but never did have the occasion to try one.

I agree.... it was a toss-up between it and the 35 Whelen when I built my rifle. I went with the Whelen "just because".... 20/20 hindsight, I might have been better off with the 338, as there seems to be a bigger variety of bullets for it, although that could just be my imagination. The 35 has a lot going for it, as well, being a factory loaded cartridge. Ballistics-wise, they are very similar, I think. I doubt that an elk could tell the difference....I have always liked the 338-06.
