I'm thinking AR 600-8-19 pertains to the US Army, not necessarily the National Guard. The only way you will find your answer for sure is to talk to a National Guard recruiter. The state has it's own criteria and regulations for prior service enlistment, rank retention, and promotions.

    Out here by the lake!
In my 40s!?!?!!! Y’all think I am OLD!!!

    I’m a young’un, 39.
When I went thru basic training there was a vet in his 40's who reenlisted. He basically said he couldn't find a decent job &had women & booze problems. Said he never had that when he was in the army & younger. I thought he was crazy as ****, but they excepted him back then in 1980. There were worse idiots at the time doing basic, me included!

IDK if it has been mentioned but some places will continue paying you during deployment. Or will pay you the difference between what you were making and what you are making deployed.

    Alright, a lot there.

So, coming from USMC Reserves last and MOS not carrying over, where does it say I’ll keep my rank with an adjusted TIG? I have been out for almost three years and was a SSgt for almost 2 1/2 years.
last time I looked if you had been out

Been out so long that I can't remember the reg that covers all that. when you sign the enlistment papers that starts your TIG over I think. Possibly even your Date of Rank. I remember that I had a guy that enlisted back in and he argued that his TIG or DOR should be a certain date. Anyways he filed an IG Complaint. The IG called me and quizzed me I turned to the regulation page and read him the same thing I read the other guy. The IG asks if the guy is deaf or stupid....lol. so I am sure of you enlist back in dates are going to be the date of your enlistment. Just dont ask me which one....lol.

With the downturn of deployments, you'd be in a good position to join the Guard/Reserves/Active and get some solid training in some career fields that open doors in the private sector such as aviation, IT, SIGINT, etc..while not deploying as often as in recent years. You'll make some great friends in the process too.

If you served on Active Duty the Nasty Girls will be a complete joke to you. I did 2 years straight off Active duty. The amount of tolerance they have for being AWOL, insubordination and failing PT and weight standards is mind boggling. Had a specialist in my squad not show up for 11 months in a row. Then they finally got him to come in. No UCMJ, just a friendly chat and they helped him out process. He even got back paid for those weekends. It was shameful.

My experience in USNG in the (early) 70s was toe the line or get sent to active duty - most likely, some place in southeast Asia.
I remember that too. There was always the threat of being put on AD for 2 years. I don't remember that actually happening tho. And once the draft ended and it became an all volunteer Army, that option went away. After that, about all we could do is discharge them, usually a General Discharge after 3 months AWOL from drills or one AWOL from annual training. Once all the hippies from the 70's had served out their 6 years, the occurrences of AWOL went way down.

I was in the TxARNG from '73 to '77. I started enlisted then went to OCS at Ft Benning. When I took over my platoon we did have some AWOL/disciplinary problems. The problem for us officers/admins was that the paperwork and effort to do an Article 13 or discharge was more punishing to us than to the offender. Most often the offender was never pursued and good riddance since he was just a pain to work with anyway.

Having spent time in all three components (NG, AD, and Reserves) I can certainly recommend continuing your service via NG. The benefits when you retire are well worth any discomfort you suffer for the next 8 years.

Any current or former National Guard folks?

I've toyed with idea of more military service and called the recruiter earlier this week. Gonna go talk with them later in the week. I have 12 years on the books already between my active and reserve time. Only need 8 more years to be eligible for a retirement one day.

The deployments to the border are worrisome though. I talked to a Trooper buddy I was in the Corps with who is down south and asked him about those guys and he mentioned some are on one year orders. I don't know how I would deal with that kind of a pay cut for 12 months.

My brother-in-law mentioned having a chance at Warrant Officer school put into my contract. I need to actually call him to get details on that but that would make it much more appealing.

Not sure what you ever ended up doing. I am currently in the TXARNG. The border mission is voluntary, so it is not like you would be forced to go down there. Units do deploy often though. Deployment lengths have dropped to about 9 months recently. If you still have any questions feel free to hit me up. A recruiter is your best source though since things change all the time. If you are looking to just still serve on a very part time basis and not deploy, check out the Texas State Guard.

Just to update everyone, I am seriously looking into the TXSG. I actually have a buddy who is in it, and he's helping move things along for me. This COVID-19 business isn't helping, but if all goes well I could be an active member in a month or so. I'll post more as things develop...

Good luck - they’ll get there but like anything in the military it can take a little time! It’s a great way to serve Texas and you’ll work alongside a lot of great people!
