Hello, all. I'm new to the site. I've been living in San Antonio since June of 2010, before that was Japan for a few years by way of Afghanistan. I'm active duty military and grew up shooting. I don't have my CHL yet, but the wife and I are planning on getting it done soon- just have to find a decent carry weapon for her and maybe another for me.

I currently own a Star BM, an old Sears-Roebuck 20ga pump shotgun, a Winchester Model 24 12ga of 1948 vintage, and a Remington .22 rifle of unknown age.

For the wife, I'm looking for something like a Bersa Thunder, CZ-82, or that small Star whose name escapes me at the moment in .380.

Me, I've been craving a small-frame revolver for carry purposes (preferably in .357), a large revolver in something like .44, and a rifle along the lines of a AK, SKS, or something of the like.

Anyway, that's the short version of the story.

Yes, with restrictions. I cannot carry or have the weapon in my vehicle under normal circumstances. If I do bring it on to any federal installation, I am required to declare it at the gate, at which time Security Forces will escort me to the base armory where I will check the weapon during the time I am on-post. It's incredibly inconvenient for someone like me who lives off-post but likes to keep a weapon in the vehicle.

For those that live on base, weapons can be stored in the home, but again, there are restrictions. Single members residing in the dorms or barracks are typically barred from storing weapons in their rooms, but those with dependants living in base housing can keep weapons at their residence. Those weapons are somewhat restricted based on the location and the type of weapon.

    Helotes!
Welcome to the forum, Mikey! Are you on Lackland or Randolph?

Also, to add a little more to the question as to bringing firearms on base, that all depends on which base you're talking about! But for the most part, they are prohibited with the exceptions already mentioned.

Many claim this is because of the US Code, but Title 18, Section 930 only prohibits personal firearms in Federal facilities (defined as buildings or parts thereof).

However, most base/post commanders in SA (Lackland, Randolph and Ft Sam) have imposed strict restrictions not allowing them anywhere on base except the armory or base housing.

About the only exception is Camp Bullis, where if you are registered to shoot at the Sportsman's Range there, you can bring unloaded guns on to shoot.

It is a point of contention, but until the rules change, we have to live with them!

    Cheers! M2
