My new TV has an optical audio only
I want to used my old trusty reciever still that takes RCA cables
    Will this adapter work?

So if it does , do I just set it near the TV and it picks up the audio stream??

    Damn smart TV..
It looks to me like you just plug the TOSlink cable into one side (audio in) and the RCA cables into the other side (audio out). Then plug the RCA cables to your trusty old receiver.

Might as well get a new receiver.
Problem solved. I looked a new receiver. I wanted one that had Bluetooth as well as play whatever I was feeding into the TV.
Turned out that I could get a surround sound bar and do all of that and get rid a metric ton of wires at the same time.
Went to worstbuy and got a nice Sony surround sound set up for a really good deal. Now it plays whatever is coming into the TV plus any Bluetooth source I want.
