As of a week ago, I finally have my TX drivers license, aka an official resident. I have three out of state CHL permits. 1. Arizona Non-resident permit, 2. Florida Non-resident permit, and 3. Idaho Resident permit.

I know TX has reciprocity agreement with all of these states, but my question is must I obtain a TX CHL to continue to carry concealed now that I am a resident?

    Thanks!

(I will refrain from voicing frustrations regarding the ridiculous circus to obtain a drivers license in this state or regarding the lack of open ground to shoot on...)

The Texas Legislature has the mind that if you are a resident, you should have a Texas CHL ... don't know if that has made its way into law yet.

As a dissenter, I believe anyone should be able to carry openly or concealed without a damned permit.

As for "prohibited persons," that should be codified into law.

Because a "prohibited person" that owns a gun anyway cares about wether or not they are supposed to carry it on their person!

I had a cop pull me over a few weeks ago (expired registration) and tell me if he caught me carrying in public with my AZ permit it was a misdemeanor. I corrected him but he didn't want to hear it and said "Have a nice day" then walked off while I was still talking. Beware.

I can tell you from experience having an AZ CWP does seem to tell cops they hooked a fish they want to throw back. TX DPS publishes the conviction rates of TX CHL holders. The numbers are extremely low (CHL holders actually commit less crimes than police) and a lot of them know that. It is basically a de facto "I'm a good guy" card issued by the state. Even though mine is from AZ they know the deal.

I suspect that there are TXLEO out there that don't agree with out of state license carry and I suppose they are going to do and/or say what they want. Nothing any one can do if they want to delay mine and their day just to be told by their superior that they have nothing to arrest me on.

Personally, I generally don't carry on my person while driving, so when pulled over, unless asked, I don't say a word.
They have yet to ask anyway.

    Do you have a CHL?

    Yes, from Florida.

If you have a handgun on or about your person you are required to display your CHL whenever a Peace Officer demands that you identify yourself. If your handgun is located here you can reach it it is about your person. Simply taking it off of your body does not relieve you of your requirment to display the CHL.

The good news is there is no penalty for failing to comply, except alienating the guy who can choose not to ticket you.

They can't arrest you for failure to ID
