As reported from MSN online, New Zealand bans types of semi automatic weapons, high-capacity magazines, “military” style semi automatic and “assault” rifles following the recent mass shootings...

That did not take very long, only five days. Unbelievable. I am glad to be an American living in America!!

    Here's the order.

This will be easy to circumvent via switching to pump action Troy rifles. However, they've promised to take additional steps and that will probably include banning magazines over a certain size, making the Troy pumps a stop-gap measure at best.

I imagine Garands and SKS rifles will be in demand. After they get those, NZ competitive shooters will take up Cowboy Action shooting so they can have centerfire (lever action) rifles with a bit of power that hold more than 5 rounds. As in the UK, I imagine that Practical Shotgun will become a big sport, along with the ridiculously extended tubes hanging under those barrels.

My heart goes out to NZ gun owners. Like the song says, you don't know what you've got till it's gone.

Not really. If you don't care about due process the way we try to (or pay lip service to) in the USA, you can just issue orders like this. It's not actually a law; it's just an order changing the definition of terms in the law that was passed back in 1983.

If you read the cited section of that law, it's absolutely clear that the NZ government has the power to declare any rifle or shotgun to be a military style assault rifle subject to all the restrictions that entails.

No surprise here, we knew it was coming as it was announced.
