CARROLLTON -- Carrollton police say a man posing as a police officer sexually assaulted a handcuffed woman in the backseat of his car Thursday morning on I-35E between the Valley View Lane and Valwood Parkway exits.

Between 9 and 10 a.m. the female driver was stopped by a dark-colored, four-door vehicle (possibly a Ford Crown Victoria) with dark-tinted windows and blue lights on the interior of the windshield. The suspect asked the woman to get out of her vehicle, handcuffed her, and put her in the back of his car, where the assault took place, according to Carrollton police spokesperson Nicole Rodriguez.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s or 40s, between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-8, with a medium build and gray or white short hair and a dark-colored beard. He was wearing a dark blue long-sleeved uniform with no patches, a gold star-shaped badge, a gold name tag with numbers on it, a police belt with a baton and handcuffs, and sunglasses. The victim did not see a handgun or radio on the belt and did not remember any lights on the exterior of the suspect's vehicle, which had vinyl seats but did not have a prisoner cage.

Police have asked the public to be on the lookout for the vehicle and if you believe you are being pulled over by someone who may not be a police officer, call 911 and drive to a well-lit location before stopping.

Comment: My favorite comment from the website was the simple question: "Why do we immediately assume it was a fake cop?" That aside, the entire comment thread is interesting reading as the theory that unmarked squads are nothing but generators of revenue for the money-hungry "police" more intent in driving up cash flow than any other activity does not seem to be limited to just a few wacky outliers. Interesting times.

Might be more helpful if someone posted info on what to do if you're not sure you're being approached by a real officer.

That info would help everyone, including officers.

Yet more proof that unmarked squads are dangerous. The usual police response is always along the lines of how unmarked cars serve the public. No, unmarked cars serve rapists and other criminals by causing confusion in the public's mind about what is a cop and what is not.

It seems unmarked squads are used for traffic "enforcement" (read: "revenue enhancement"), as well as mobile rape centers and stop and rob vehicles. Who knew?
