In Colorado we wore snowmobile suits and mittens. We were good to go skiing at -40. Mittens are your friend, gloves are useless.
Wind is the big equalizer. It is a hell of a lot colder when it is windy. Because it was so dry in Colorado, the cold did not seem so bad. I went to St. Johns Newfoundland last month and the very humid 25 degrees chilled me to the bone.
Good luck with the job, winter is not forever....
I spent some time in "lovely" Beach North Dakota back in the '80's. All I can suggest is that you lay in a supply of Chapstick, 'cause it gets so dry inside when you warm up that -40F winter air that your lips can crack enough to let you bleed to death.
One of the natives told me that a big danger from the cold comes when you have to take a piss. Your penis can shrink so bad that it's possible to accidentally grab a hair by mistake and end up pissing down your leg, ultimately causing your leg to freeze.
