One of the groups of coworkers on my teams has a perception they are inundated with maintaining old things to the point that it impedes their ability to make new things. They have three deadlines for maintenance work based on priority.
Deadline 1 is for Critical maintenance and they have 30 business days to complete the work. Deadline 2 is for high priority items and is 45 business days. Deadline 3 is everything else and it’s 90 business days.
By count, there have been 110 critical work requests year to date, 150 high priority work requests, and 79 low priority requests. Looking at the average time to complete across the board it’s about 11 days.
By category, critical items take 9 business days, high priority is taking 13 business days, and low priority is taking 10 days. This is from the time the request is received until it is completed.
Why this matters is that we plan for maintenance work to account for 10% (4hrs) of the work week. What we are seeing is that 25% or more time is being devoted to maintenance, which means new things take longer to deliver.
