Yes they can! Yeah I didn't want him to suffer for sure. They said by Sunday night he had quit eating and drinking and wouldn't even move. Then he was trying to comfort them at the vets office because they were crying.
I have been in that position with a dog.
My condolences to all of you.

    Listen to Ben. He smart.
Seems like your husband might be as well. You just might have a keeper there.
When my dog Charlie died 5 years ago, me and two of my grown boys sat in a pack office crying like babies. Screw anyone that don't understand. I would kill for my family. That includes Bait. She is not my protector, I am hers.

If I were married to someone who didn't cry under those circumstances, I'd know I married the wrong person.

True, I would feel like they were a heartless person.

I really did get a keeper; it was so hard for me last night and he just put his arms around me and told me it was ok to let it all out. I have so many fun memories of Roscoe and all the things we did together. We hiked in almost two feet of snow together, we of course waxed his paws, so he didn't get frost bite. He would follow me everywhere and if I went into a store especially a candy store he would be waiting for me patiently because I always had a treat for him when I came out. If I ever gave another dog attention when we were out hiking or wandering small towns; he would sit between the other dog and me and be like nope this is not acceptable.
