Looking at an NV-7 at a gun show.

I probably would have pulled the trigger except for a tidbit of info I had read a while back ... a 308 has too much recoil and will cause premature failure.

I would like to hear real world experience.

    What exactly is an NV-7?

PVS-7? They're not really weapon-mountable in the first place.

We might be talking about something different... Just to be sure, you talking about this?

NVG like the 14 (7 has a similar tube but the 14 is a monocular and has a gain control) don't like the recoil of a .308. I'm sure there are thermals that can stand up to the abuse, but intensifier tubes are kind of sensitive.

Apologize ... newly interested so my model numbers are all fouled up.
It was the monocular version and the one pictured was next to it.

    So that aside ...

intensifiers can't take the recoil when gun mounted.

    True statement?

True if the gun is .308. Generally true, anyway. And it's a matter of how long they'll last under .308 recoil. Will it die on the tenth shot? Nah. But it'll shorten the lifespan.

Also depends a bit on the .308. Some heavy-barreled 15lb beast AR rifle with a good brake probably won't bother the tube.

Sage has it pretty spot on with this statement

I've never tried one of the hydraulic buffers. Did run an adjustable gas block and brake on my (.223) AR for a while and the difference that made was amazing.

See, here's a guy who knows a lot more than I do about it. Hell, he knows what the inside of NVGs look like. :p
