    I'm a helicopter pilot - loss of tail rotor effectiveness (LTE) at high density altitude. These guys were extremely lucky. Probably flew off to change their shorts.

    A blurb I read about it on another site claimed it had to do with hitting an air current off that rock face, but I don't know enough about the insane devices that fly by beating the air into submission to be able to judge the accuracy of that statement.

    That could very well have occurred also. We train for "pinnacle" flying because the wind currents in those environments can be tricky. Similar to landing on a tall building.
