since Texas has a reputation as 'gun friendly', why is it one of only 4 states that don't allow open carry?

Make the "would be" bad guys uncertain who has a gun or not...

I'm actually for Handgun Carry License. Concealed or Open, your choice...

Because of the adoption of a single city's policy back in the late-1800s.

It's an old, worn-out law that was meant to try to resist some of the rowdy cowboy towns back in the late 1800s. Times have changed, and I feel it's time to bring back open carry.

Personally, it's all BS. THE SECOND AMENDMENT IS MY OPEN/CONCEALED HANDGUN LICENSE

As I understand, there was a bill written for the 2009 session at Austin, but it never got sponsored.
Discussion of it on another forum had a lot of disagreement and such as to whether it (OC) should be allowed or not.
In short, I think its due to not enough agreement amongst the ranks of gun owners.

The problem isn't really a bad thing...

Due to the way our State Legislature works, things like Open Carry (which I am in full support of) get pushed to the side or back burner, as the legislature meets rarely enough that some of the more important things need to get taken care of. So Open Carry keeps getting pushed aside. I don't think we would have any issues gettin it passed today, and I'd probably open carry myself, but there are slightly more pressing things that come before the guys in Austin.

If you want it, write your state rep and ask them to sponsor it. Seems a lot of them (reps) thought it was a good bill, but none stepped up to pen their name as the sponsor. Were they too busy? fighting other battles? didn't think it would fly? donno. But if it doesn't get to the floor, it can't pass. And it needs to be done before election just in case Perry doesn't get reelected, as I have no idea how KBH would feel about it.

I have no faith in KBH, that's why I'll be voting for Debra Medina.

Here's what she has to say about open carry: "
Debra on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms

    No compromise 2nd Amendment

Gun ownership is essential to our liberty. Private property rights notwithstanding, the right to keep and bear arms should not be regulated or infringed. We Texans should be free to carry our arms openly, and any attempts to restrict gun ownership should be rejected."

What ended up happening this year in the Legislature was that there was a concerted effort by existing progun Texans to focus on improving" existing CC laws instead of trying to introduce a radically new idea.

Depending on which side of the fence gun owners sit on was the way they sided in the OC v CC debate this past year.

To mention it lightly, there was a turf war that I didn't particularly like. And it went on between the progun folks.
