Purely just a because purchase, I want a gun from my birth year. I found a P1 made in 1982. It has the thicker slide and hex bolt fixes. Price is fair. Should I get it? Any glaring issues I should look for?

    Any suggestions?

I was thinking Browning Hi power, S&W 439/459, etc....

Make sure it's actually somewhat matching, at least the slide and receiver. I've seen some pre 1975 receivers with post 1975 slides mixed together.

    Other than that, go git!

    Gunz are icky.
The P-1 is a cool gun. Lots of fun to shoot.
Be aware the aluminum framed P-1's have a limited service life of about 10'000rds.
If the one you're looking at is a heavily used gun you won't get a lot of use out of it.
Also, absolutely no +P ammo in them. Standard pressure rounds only.
The ergonomics on them is a bit weird but they're fine weapons. Their center of balance is back in the grip so they don't point and settle on target so easy. They tend to "twitch" off target very easily.
They do shoot accurately but you really gotta hold them right on and don't twitch.
As typical the S/A trigger pull is sweet but the D/A trigger pull is a beast.
Mags are readily available. Holsters, other than the old military style, aren't. Nicer wood grips are available as well.
Style points are off the chain tho.
I liked mine. In a moment of madness I sold it and have regretted it since.

I say get it and be happy. YOLO.

FWIW, some of the late WWII production P38's were poorly machined & fitted. I saw a bunch for sale at a gun show in the RGV some years back, which I first mistook for modern counterfeit copies. They had wheel marks, rough actions, & spotty bluing. Someone more expert than I kindly explained their origins. From their overappearance, I would question their alloys.

if you can get a P1 for a good price nab it, now word of caution, P1s have issues where occasionally the decocker will fire a cartridge in the chamber so if you do use the decocker be mindful of that and use one thumb to lower the hammer and the other to hit the decocker switch.

other than that they are fine flat shooting pistols
