Buddy of mine has an LDA that was having a lot of hangups when firing.

I broke it down and checked all internals but, found nothing wrong.

After removing the rear sight, there was a spring that was recessed into a notch (pic) that was damaged. This spring seems to apply pressure to the firing pin plunger under the slide (pic). I can not find a spring that goes here on any schematic online. After dry firing a few times without the rear sight or spring, there are no more hangups. Any ideas?

Guessing that plunger keeps it from firing out of battery. It's kind of important.

Can you steal a spring from a ball point pen and cut it down to work?

That's the firing pin safety that wont allow the firing pin to move forward toll the trigger is all the way to the rear. A broke spring will fug up the operation.

You need to replace the spring.

I wont comment on removing that particular safety. Proceed at your own risk on that one.

Just order a new firing pin block/safety/plunger spring.

Its number 37 on this schematic and list.

Any colt series 80 compatible part will do.

Just an update, replaced the spring and tracked down a grub screw for the rear site (it was missing). Shot 30 rds, no problem. A little weird shooting a Dao 1911. Total cost was 5 bucks and he replaced my ammo.
I’ve still got a P11 LDA, although I don’t carry it much anymore. Still nice to shoot but not really an improvement over a traditional 1911 cocked and locked. It was a good idea for people who didn’t like SA 1911’s but never really caught on.
