So,....everywhere you go?......I’m probably unusual in that I’ve lived in SoCal 4 times and NoCal once. In 1963 SoCal was a happening place. In 1965 it was starting to really strain - I remember walking down the street in a misting rain with my eyes burning from the diluted nitric acid caused by the smog. Fast forward to 1978, I hit the streets to get Prop13 passed. That limited the reassessment hikes to 1% per year. 1999 moved to Sausalito. Marin county is totally insane. Sausalito needed to tear down the 1920’s Police/Fire station admin building - the PD was in modular offices on landfill in the Bay. People fought the plans on the basis it was bad Feng Shui, and won in county wide election. Moved down to Orange County and watched the train wreck of 2008/9 coming and moved back to Texas in 2003.
