A friend of mine bought a Remington 700 in 22-250. It's an ADL model that came with rear and front iron sights. The previous owner removed the rear sight to fit a scope on it and left the front sight on. The rear sight holes had mismatched plugs in them.

The rifle has that black rough texture finish like the SPS models and he wants me to reblue it. Fair enough, but let's get rid of the rear and front sight holes forever since we are going to refinish it.. He said okay because he will only use the scope anyway. It has the black synthetic stock and we will replace it with a wood stock and I will jewel the bolt for him also...... It's currently black and the same finish as the rifle.

I stripped the rifle down and.....................

I cleaned all oil and debris and then chamfered the holes in the barrel, front and rear...................

Out of my own weird curiosity, how much time did this take vs re barreling it?

A re-barrel would still have to refinished for the receiver and barrel to match.........so about 45 minutes more or less of labor to fill the holes.....

The savings in $$$ over buying a new barrel is worth the effort..............imho.........

Not factoring the costs, Most people don't have the tools and gauges to rebarrel a rifle.

Going to a gunsmith probably is going to cost at least a couple hundred, plus the cost of the barrel.

Plus with the method @V-Tach details, if the rifle is already dialed in on it's ammo. there is no loss in accuracy, since the barrel is never removed.

I have used this method on 700's for the sight screw holes on the LH side of the receiver before. It works like a champ.
