A friend of mine bought a Remington 700 in 22-250. It's an ADL model that came with rear and front iron sights. The previous owner removed the rear sight to fit a scope on it and left the front sight on. The rear sight holes had mismatched plugs in them.
The rifle has that black rough texture finish like the SPS models and he wants me to reblue it. Fair enough, but let's get rid of the rear and front sight holes forever since we are going to refinish it.. He said okay because he will only use the scope anyway. It has the black synthetic stock and we will replace it with a wood stock and I will jewel the bolt for him also...... It's currently black and the same finish as the rifle.
I stripped the rifle down and.....................
I cleaned all oil and debris and then chamfered the holes in the barrel, front and rear...................
Then I annealed the oval head screws................
Screw them in as tight as possible.................
Peen them down with a hammer.......................
First I used a Bastard Mill File.............
Then I changed to a smooth file................
Rear holes are done..................used 180, 240, 400 and will finish with 600 grit.........
Front sight holes ready for filing...............
Front sight holes are done.......
Now I will polish the barrel and receiver for refinishing.................
