MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. -- An intruder who tried to break into a southwest Miami-Dade County home was shot and killed early Tuesday morning, police said.
The fatal shooting occurred at about 2 a.m. outside 5851 SW 118th Ave.
When Miami-Dade police arrived, they found the security chain on the fence that borders the property broken and the body of a 38-year-old man.
Police said it appeared two men tried to burglarize the home when the resident fought with them outside and fatally shot one of them. The second intruder fled the scene but was later in the area, police said. He was detained and is being questioned by police.
A neighbor told Local 10 she heard several shots, the scream of the resident and two more shots.
The resident's family and friends said he had a gun because he had been burglarized as many as 10 times in the past six months. Neighbors said the resident, who runs a landscaping business out of the home, had already had thousands of dollars in lawn equipment stolen.
Police said they were investigating to determine exactly what occurred
