My grandparents picked cotton. WIth those long bags, all day long, shredding their hands on those bolls.
So did my grandparents, on my mothers side. Mom would tell me stories of her riding in grannies long cotton bag and tossing out the cotton bolls as fast a granny put it in.

I picked cotton on our farm.
    But just for fun.
    Fun?
After hoeing it all summer, I didn’t want to see it again.
    But harvest came anyway.
1 bale an acre crops meant long days after school let out and the bus dropped us off.
Cotton is a "make or break" crop.

I'll never plant a seed of it.

    Yes.
    I wasn't working.
I was probably 5 or 6 and it was fun.

Then the government paid us not to grow anything.

I guess that I am the oldest one here. I picked cotton several years a long time ago. And it wasn't for fun either.
Got to jump down and turn around and pick a bale of cotton
You got to jump down and turn around and pick a bale of hay
You got to jump down and turn around and pick a bale of cotton
You got to jump down and turn around and pick a bale a day

My mom said she was never good at picking cotton. She pulled cotton which resulted in much higher weight harvested each day for way less money when they weighed in at the gin.

I'm glad I was never taught the difference.
