I hit the neighborhood pond yesterday after work for about 20 minutes. Ended up with 1 crappie on the roadrunner.

Hit the pond again this evening for about an hour. I was throwing I little grub jig with an ultra ultra light rod which made catching fun. Ended up with a few crappie & bass. 20190302_172040.jpg

    Cool.
    That brings back memories.
    Back when we were newlyweds.
Carter was a memory, but the high interest rates weren't.
Reagan was getting things going. I digress.
I bought a bass boat and the maiden voyage was to Sweetwater Lake. Late February and kinda warm midday but chilly otherwise. I killed the big motor, dropped the trolling motor in and plowed up into a thick stand of flooded brush.
We sat a bit and I tied a roadrunner on a diawa ultralight and handed it to my better half. Told her "just throw it out there and reel it in slow". I planned on getting my casting rig set up.
In about 10 seconds I heard her telling me to "take it off".
Heh! I spun around to find a nice crappie in my face dangling from her fishing pole. Ok. I got it off the hook, chunked it in the livewell and went back to getting my gear ready. "Hey!"
Yep, another crappie in my face. Rinse, repeat.
I never wet a hook that afternoon. We got home and I cleaned 14 crappie. Pretty much all the livewell would hold.

About the best day of fishing I ever had.

It's always cool to have days like that.
Our pond is usually good this time a year but, for the last 6 weeks we've had a over population of Comerants/Water Turkeys in our pond. One week we had about 65 -70 for several days. Then of course we always have 3-10 on any given day. If you didnt know, they can eat 3-5lbs of forage in a day.
Ive had days where 20-30 crappie are common, the best day I had was a morning before a front in February. It was 75 & muggy for a few days then dropped to 50's.
I sat in one spot for about a hour & half & caught them every to every other cast until the front hit. It was pretty cool to see the bite turn off like a lite switch.

We have them bastards too. I'm thinking they are lost... they should be on the coast feeding on mullet...lol.

I really think they should take the Comerant off the federally protected list. They have a over population problem IMO.
