I've been reloading for many (36) years and have always questioned the proper storage of powder. I was told by my dad about the signs of powder being bad by the smell, but I have had some really old powder that smells normal and still shoots good (some dating back to early 1950's).

I guess my question for you is how and where do you store your powder, primers and loaded rounds. Out here in West Texas there are extreme temperature swings and really can't be good on powder, etc.

    Thanks for the input.

When I lived in Midland I stored it in the house, in a closet. The key is not to get it too hot, and keep it out of the sun.

Now I store it in an interior closet, in the center of the house and it stays very stable in terms of temperature.

Your analysis of bad powder using the old sniffer is still the best way as far as I am concerned.

For years I kept mine in a closet in the house here in DFW.. A/C space ...

Got a small gun/reloading area now.. All my reloading components are still in A/c'd space in a cabinet...

Just finished up 2 lbs of Unique I bought back in the 70s (got lazy and away from reloading for quite a few years while ammo was cheap and plentiful) and every one has gone bang...

Moisture and excessive heat are probably the most damaging..

Yes, the smell test and it changes visually.

Even if it does go bad, it only gets weaker.

    No worries Mate...

I keep my powder in a 20mm can. Put some desiccant in there and you should be good to go. The temperature shouldn't be a huge issue if it's kept inside, but humidity certainly is.
