    Hey Baboon,

The sons & I tested that theory with 12ga hulls some time back.

Took about 1/2 dozen damaged hulls with primers...

Filled 1/2 full with a variety of oils/solvents...(no shot/wad or powder)

Let set for three weeks? (been a while)...

Stuck 'em in the 870 (if we could) or the Stevens 311 (S&S) if we had to.

    EVERY ONE WENT BANG!

So...I'm a skeptic on the oil kills primers theory....

We did a variety of rifle & handgun as well....mixed results....(2/3? went bang? 3/4? went bang??)

ALL FACTORY MIL/SURP RIFLE PRIMERS (8mm/30-06/308, 762x54) went BANG...no matter how long soaked. (empty primed case) Same with US GI 45acp...pulled bullets (a real kicker as they are crimped and painted with asphaltum sealer)

    Back to our regular programming...

This kind of negates the idea that one should “never touch a primer with bare fingers” to prevent skin oils from making primers inert - Sounds like it might be an ole wives tale.

    Hey Tip,

You ever mess up a case? Or a hull? (you can get a lot of oil in a 12ga hull)...

    Try it yourself....

All the mil/surp rifle primers went bang. All the 209's (shotgun hulls) went bang.

Most of the mil/surp pistol primers went bang...

Only thing....? It pays to CLEAN IMMEDIATELY! As the primer residue can cause bore damage if allowed to set...

(some ATF on a Patch w/jag...will do fine)

Way primers are now, I would not "deliberately" set this up....but if an "oopsy" were to happen?

I used KROIL, ATF, Motor Oil, PB BLASTER, Fuel, thinner (I think? lacquer thinner may have had the best success rate? of killin' primers??)

Some stuff would "dissolve" the plastic hull...still plenty of oil in bare brass portion of hull...

I was SURE that the oil would kill them (my kids were teens at the time, all about BLOWIN' STUFF UP!!) Hmmm? where could they have learnt that??LOL
