#2 seems pretty straight forward no brainer. But #1 ...huh? Had a hard time finding a translation from a conservative/libertarian site, but found this, so #1 looks like a go too.

If paywalled, see post 7 for cliffs.

Maybe I can see it because I run Ublock Origin on Firefox?

    Cliffs:

#2 increases homestead exemption from 25k to 40k.

#1, disabled and 65+ will have their frozen taxes get reduced every year due to state funding to districts increasing and making up difference.

If you have homestead exemption, #2 lowers your taxes. 65+ or disabled, #1 lowers your taxes.

    I'll take a 40k exemption, not bad.

This is the price for no state income tax. Having lived in two "on income tax" states and one "income tax" state, I found the TOTAL tax burdens to be very similar to individual citizens.

I think the costs vary from state to state on the cost and benefits of having a state income tax. For example, in Maryland, the income taxes alone would be higher than my current property taxes.

Mrs Pronstar and I earn a decent wage.

Income taxes in CA we’re out of control, we’re waaaaay further ahead with our property taxes in TX

Of course CA has both income tax AND property tax. Property tax is around 1% but the median home price is close to $760k

Funny. I lived in one state, worked in another. Both had income tax. File for both and pay alternate. Texas is much cheaper! School bonds are where we get screwed. Robin hood is another. I'm over 65, paid for my kids education, why should I pay for the next 2-3 generations' education?

Disabled exemption already freezes school tax but I'd vote to see it actually decrease.

I'd also vote to raise the homestead exemption.

The problem with property taxes is school districts. We have a bond election coming up where the district said they dont anticipate taxes going up because of it. A few folks are pissed cause I'm pushing a no vote. I said when they say they dont anticipate taxes going up they mean taxes will eventually go up.

But we need schools they said. Bullshit I said. The high school is building an indoor football air conditioned practice field so no they dont need cash if they are blowing money on an indoor air conditioned practice field.

    School districts are the problem.

    "School districts are the problem."

    Agreed, especially since,

"This only relates to school taxes, which make up about half of a total property tax bill."

Property taxes make property owners pay for schools while renters skate, even though in many areas the children of renters are the majority of students.

I saw a campaign ad the other day for a guy in Idaho, he said, "Property taxes mean you never really own your property." I had not thought of it that way, but he is right, they should be abolished!

    "while renters skate"

    Gee, NO!

It is included in their rent payments. It is a cost-of-business for the landlords, just like any other cost, it is ultimately payed by the tenants.

Just got my 2022 tax appraisal from the county. Market value/appraised value doubled from last year. Assessment value increased by the maximum 10%. I have no idea how this will actually affect my taxes with the Homestead and Over 65 exemptions.

Maybe ... getting old, but it sure feel like "skating".

Apartment complex where our Houston residence now is:

Apartment complex total HISD 2022 tax bill = $496,216.00 (per HCAD)
Number of rental units = 270 (per HCAD)

Average HISD 2022 yearly tax/unit = $1837.84 year or $153.15/month average per renter.

Basically, renting beats the hell out of the $451.80/month HISD taxes we were paying on that $12,300/year property tax bill less than six blocks away from the home we just sold.
