Forgive my ignorance on the subject - I'm a bit new to TX.

I've read the proposition and can take it at face value. But I'm wondering, what is the current and historical context for a state income tax? Is there a faction arguing for one? Is there a significant possibility that TX could enact a state income tax?

Asking for a friend who really appreciates Texas' lack of state income taxes. He'll be looking at Wyoming if Texas gets stupid.

There has never been an income tax in the state or even the Republic of Texas. That doesn’t mean there are zero taxes, as you know. But, it gives some choice in the amount of state and local taxes you pay.

Is there a faction arguing for one?

It’s more that some are arguing the status quo requiring a state referendum before enacting an income tax is strong enough as is. Except for the Austin-based For A Better Texas; their position is that we can’t possibly know the needs of future Texans, so we shouldn’t rule out an income tax.

Well, under the current statutes, an income tax (if approved) can only do two things: pay down property taxes and pay fo education. That’s the same language that got the lottery here, and so far I’m still paying property tax. Fool me once and all that.

The good folks at For A Better Texas have plans on how they would spend your dollars, so you can bet they’d influence legislators to tax and spend their way a social Utopia.

Finally, the way I understand it, is if prop 4 fails, the original language remains, so it still takes a pretty significant uphill battle to implement a state income tax.

I see another one fell for the BS.

YES vote is to add an amendment to the constitution banning a state income tax and add a 2/3 majority in both houses to even put it to a vote by the people to pass an income tax. Currently only requires a majority. It would also require another amendment to the constitution to retract the ban.

It's purposely worded to confuse. A quick look and the voter thinks yes approves and no rejects.

During some lean times here I took a job in NY. I worked there for 3 years and paid the income taxes - and all the other taxes they hit me with. (They have yet to find anything that they don't think needs a tax.) So what did I get for all that extra taxation? Snow plowing. Don't get me wrong, those guys did a terrific job, and if all we did was pay a tax on that, I would have been a happy guy. But the taxes there sucked the life out of anyone with a job and made it nearly impossible for new businesses to start up.

Once the government gets a hold on a revenue source, they never let it go. And if they have money, they will find friends of theirs to distribute it to.

The Socialists - and let's face facts, the Democratic Party is now a Socialist party - believe that the government should run everything, and so all money should be funneled through the government. They want an income tax and have pushed to enact one in Texas. We need a lot less government, not more. We need money to stay in the hands of those who earn it. We need to keep the Second Amendment alive and strong. (Remember: Private ownership of firearms is not compatible with Socialism.) We need to keep Freedom of Speech alive and strong and don't allow the Left's strong arm tactics to shut it down (like the Antifas). Starve the Socialists by limiting tax revenues that fund their give-away programs.

Say 'NO!' to income taxes by voting "YES" for Prop 4.
