I'm about to be in the National Guard and am also prior Active Navy (Honorably Discharged) the questions I have are, do I have to take a CHL course and what would be my complete cost to receive a CHL?

Next question is a little stranger. I have been unemployed for the last 8 months (main reason I'm going into the National Guard), and therefore have been unable to pay my Child Support in full during that time. I have nothing that is going on in the court system. My Son's mother is kept up to date on what is going on and so is the Attorney General's office. I will be starting to pay my child support again as soon as I get paid from the Guard. The question goes with this I just pulled from a .pdf I got off the the txdps website. This is the part I'm confused about:

"(10) has not been finally determined to be delinquent in making a
child support payment administered or collected by the attorney general;"

The way it reads to me is confusing, maybe cause I'm getting tired, but it reads like I'm not going to be able to get my CHL because I lost a job to due to the economy. Or is this not something I should worry about since I will be able to start paying again very soon with regular paychecks coming in?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Bear

#1. Cost of your CHL. As Honorably Discharged your state fee will be $70.00. You will need to send a copy of your DD-214 w/ your App.
Total cost is not possible to say exactly because you have to add your class fee which is set by each individual Instructor. Fingerprints from Fast Print are $9.95. Some Instructors still do prints in the class & that is included in the class price.
    Final answer
    $70.00 + class cost & prints.

#2. As you have stated on our child support you are still eligable. If you do the class & have a CHL, do not catch up, & are finally determined (by a court) to be delinquint, they will suspend your CHL until you catch up & have that final disposition documentation.

    Thank you very much Longtooth.

I was reading more and noticed that I should be able to waive part of the class, because I will be in the Guard and I'm Veteran. Are there classes that are set up for that specific situation or do I have to take the whole class just to get the section I need?

GC §411.1881. EXEMPTION FROM INSTRUCTION FOR CERTAIN
PERSONS. (a) Notwithstanding any other provision of this
subchapter, a person may not be required to complete the range
instruction portion of a handgun proficiency course to obtain or renew
a concealed handgun license issued under this subchapter if the
    person:
    (1) is currently serving in or is honorably discharged from:
    (A) the army, navy, air force, coast guard, or marine corps of
the United States or an auxiliary service or reserve unit of one of those
branches of the armed forces; or
    (B) the state military forces, as defined by Section 431.001;
    and
    (2) has, within the five years preceding the date of the person's
application for an original or renewed license, as applicable,
completed a course of training in handgun proficiency or familiarization
as part of the person's service with the armed forces or state military
    forces.
    (b) The director by rule shall adopt a procedure by which a license
holder who is exempt under Subsection (a) from the range instruction
portion of the handgun proficiency requirement may submit a form
demonstrating the license holder's qualification for an exemption under
that subsection. The form must provide sufficient information to allow
the department to verify whether the license holder qualifies for the
    exemption.

I believe most initial CHL classes have the range instruction buried somewhere in the middle of the day of training. I know when I teach privately I do, and when I teach for a local gun range we do. So you would still have to be there for the start of the class, and later for any coursework after the range and for the final exam and issuance of the CHL100 (certificate of training).

The actual shooting is but a small portion of the class, and why miss an opportunity to shoot? ;)

I'm in the same situation, aside from the child support thing. I was Honorably Discharged from the Navy last December. The way I read it, if it was less than a year ago, they waive %100 of the state fee. You've been unemployed for 8 months, was that when you got out? if so, take the class ASAP.
