My two granddaughters were always enthusiastic about shooting the Daisy Red Ryder and 9XP Co2 pistol in our backyard, and they got pretty good with them. Last month I gifted them a Henry .22 lever action youth model.

Yesterday, SIL and I took them to Lonestar Range and Academy to let them experience shooting a real firearm. They loved it and so did their dad and I. Between the two of them they put 150 rounds through the rifle at the 25 and 50 yard targets.

We were just about to wrap things up and head to the pistol range to shoot our 9mm pistols, when we got to talking to Tony, the range owner. He asked if we had .22 pistols for the girls to shoot. Nope, just the 9s. He said "wait here" and came back with a couple of Taurus TX 22s. Use these he says. Great!

Tony came with us over to the pistol range and instead of just supervising, he began an impromptu basic pistol shooting class with the girls. I mean, a complete 45 minute class on eye dominance, pistol grip, sight picture, trigger control, safe handling, magazine loading, and chambering a round.

Then he started them out shooting at the 3 yard line. They both put several so close to the bull's eye that he moved them back to the 10 yard line. A few tips on stance and posture and they were shooting 1½" to 2" groups. Pretty damn good for the first time on the range. Tony was impressed, their dad was impressed, I was impressed.

We spent 3½ hours at the range and never did shoot our 9mm pistols. That was the most awesome time I've ever had at the range, and I never fired a shot.

    Awesome story!

In my experience, there are some memorable days or conversations we have as kids that we look back on with love for the rest of our lives. And the specific ones that stick in the memory happen by accident to some degree. The grown-up can help the odds for those magic times, but can't completely orchestrate it. Maybe this is one of those, sounds like you were up to the job there!

That’s great! I wish my grandkids would show some interest.
It started one day when I asked if they would like to shoot my Daisy Red Ryder. I wasn't sure how they would react, but I was pleasantly surprised. They started competing to see who could shoot the best and it was on, LOL.

All of my grand kids like to shoot. I started them out with BB guns when they were pretty young.

When the 2 oldest grand daughters turned 11 I took them to some shoots sponsored by my nephew. They shot rifles, shotguns and handguns. At one of the shoots they shot skeet until their shoulders were bruised pretty bad. They were proud of their bruises and kept their sleeves rolled up for several days afterwards to show them off. The rule was no one under 11 could attend. Too bad they stopped having the shoots before the other grand kids were old enough to attend.
