This isn't the answer you are looking for, but I put my young drivers in large vehicles for safety reasons. And very glad I did so, after someone pulled out right in front of one of my kids. Did not damage to my old SUV, but took the front end off the car that pulled out in front of them (other driver was at fault).

The gas bill difference will not be huge, small price to pay for safety at risk filled age.
I told the wife the other night... "I'm buying all the kids old H1 hummers for their first vehicles"

Pretty much any Toyota or Surbaru product is what I would be looking at.
My grand daughter rolled her 2008 Subaru Forester WITHOUT seat belt fastened and had ZERO injuries about 50 mph snow storm in Colorado. I have had 3 Subarus and all were great cars that lasted forever with minimal maintenance

Yeah, aside from the ones prone to blowing head gaskets, they're reliable little cars and great handling on slippery stuff if the driver knows what they're doing.

Thanks for all the great advise. Unfortunately we never came up with a viable idea on how to pay for it. Bless ya'll anyway. May your new next year be better than the last.
