Register to Vote....How?

Ok, confession time....I am NOT registered to vote. Until late 2012...I had no interest in politics. I avoided everything political and was COMPLETELY ignorant to which side had which views. I was even, at one point, taking the position that our votes don't matter since there is the electoral college, and there is no guarantee that our electorates will vote the way we told them to. Well that has changed, and I want to at LEAST become a voter. So my questions are simple....

How do I register to vote?
Do I have to register at different levels? (local, state, federal etc)
Can I do this online, or do I have to mail something in?

How do you register?

Registering to vote is easy in Texas. It doesn't even require a stamp! Official applications to register to vote are postage-paid by the State of Texas.
In most Texas counties, the County Tax Assessor-Collector is also the County Voter Registrar. In some counties, the County Clerk or County Elections Administrator registers voters. You may obtain an application from the County Voter Registrar's office, the Secretary of State's Office, libraries, many post offices, or high schools. From our website, you may request that we send you an official, postage-paid application. Or, you may download an informal application, but you will be required to affix a stamp before mailing. You may also register to vote when you apply for or renew your driver's license.
Read the instructions on the form, fill it out and mail it postage-free to the County Voter Registrar, or hand-deliver it to the County Voter Registrar's office.
You must be at least 17 years and 10 months of age on the date you apply. If for any reason you cannot register yourself, with your permission, your spouse, parent or child may fill out and sign an application for you if that person is a registered voter or has applied for voter registration. This person is known as your "agent."
The application must be received in the County Voter Registrar's office or postmarked 30 days before an election in order for you to be eligible to vote in that election. You will receive a voter registration certificate in the mail after the County Voter Registrar has processed your voter registration application. Upon receipt of the voter registration certificate, sign it, fold it and keep in it in your wallet and take it to the polls with you when you vote.
All voters who registered to vote in Texas must provide a Texas driver's license number or personal identification number issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety or the last four digits of your social security number. If you have not been issued any of these numbers, then you must state that fact on the application by checking the designated box.

Keep in mind that the deadline to register to vote is 30 days prior to the next election. For our county (not sure if it's different county wise or not) that day is today, but you would be all good for next November.

Request a voter reg. app. Fill out the mailing addy and it'll come by mail. When it arrives, fill it out and mail it in to the voter registrar. ETA: then your new voter reg card will be mailed to you.

We've done it that way (through the SoS site) and no worry about your personal info going to unknowns online.

So I mailed out the stuff on the 4th, and it says im registered to vote! Will they be sending a voter id card in the mail? if so, how long does that take before I get it?

I had to update my registration and they still haven't sent me a new card, however I checked online and my status was changed back to "Active" and I just called them and they told me all I would need is my license or other approved photo ID.

Speaking of elections, my wife and I are attending a rally in Denton today for Greg Abbot. Ted Nugent will be there and I'll hopefully get some pics of the event.

Your OP is honest and I could have written that post myself because it fit perfectly! I hated anything to do with politics and there are millions of us in exactly the same position. Unfortunately, we needed to learn that it was our inaction that allowed Liberal Socialists to gain a foothold in government.

That was then and this is now. I believe that voters like us will be the wild card in future elections but no one even considers us as factors in swaying election results!

When I started this, I knew nothing about the candidates so I went to my county website, determined what precinct I was in, then downloaded and printed a sample ballot for each election. State and national candidates will be the same on most of the precincts but it's possible the ballots will be very different. The point is to make sure you get the correct sample ballot.

I researched each candidate, marked my preferences or trashed anyone I didn't like and marked it right on my sample ballot. I weighed input from Conservative websites, NRA magazines and my own research. NO SINGLE INPUT determined my choices. I checked all of it and made up my own mind. I took that sample ballot in with me to vote and it made the process much easier.
