Remington 700 Project

I've had this Remington 700 ADL SA (.223) action in the back of the safe for several years and my Son wants me to build a rifle with it for him. He wants a varmint rifle, so that is where I'm headed.

Most of the work will be intended for accuracy and some will be purely cosmetic. While waiting for additional tooling to arrive I have started getting things prepared.

My son ordered a Green Mountain HB blank 17 in. with 1/12 rifling (.223) unchambered and unthreaded.

While inspecting the receiver, I noticed the lug contact on one lug is very poor. Uneven lug contact is an accuracy killer. I don't remember where or who I got the action from, but accuracy was probably a problem with it.

I made an arbor last night to hold the bolt for doing some mill work......and laser marked it...........

How the arbor will be used....

Whether the stock will be wood, synthetic or chassis hasn't been decided yet. This will definitely be a learning adventure for me...

Lol holy cow those lugs hardly have any bearing surface.

If you and when you reface the lug area in the receiver would it be shorter as when you do the same on the bolt? If so how do you correct it? Maybe just replace the bolt? As you can tell I know 0 about any process of this! I guess the headspacing could/would take care of the refacing/squaring?

Yes I will be taking off a bit of the receiver lug faces and also some off the rear bolt lug faces. Both alone could affect headspace, but since we are chambering a new barrel the new dimensions will be accounted for.

We are talking a couple thousandths of an inch...

Some of the tooling ordered came in, but I am waiting for a DRO (direct digital readout) that I ordered for the lathe. After I install the DRO, I will continue work on the project.......the DRO will make my life mo betta.........

Display unit came today but not the scales.....................impatiently waiting..............

Just finished the install. Had to fabricate my own brackets and scale covers.......what came with the DRO was minimal and not really helpful for my installation......took me two days..........had to mount on the front of the cross slide because my carriage lock prevented the install on the back side...

Now............ back to work...................

I squared the receiver threads and receiver lug faces. I then trued the receiver threads. Tomorrow I will chuck up the receiver in lathe and cut/square the receiver face. Then I will start work on the bolt........
