I recently called them for that info. It only takes a minute and in addition to telling you when it was made, they tell you the original configuration of the gun.

Calling Remington is the best way to find the manufacture date and they're happy to help you. For a quick estimate, look at the shell lifter at the bottom of the shotgun. If it has a "U" shaped relief cut, it is fairly new. Without that cut, it's an old one.

If it has a shiny chrome shell lifter its pre-1977.

The barrel code will identify the month and date of manufacture of the barrel.
Remington 870 and 1100's barrels get swapped out often. Especially in the days of fixed chokes.
You can approximate the manufacture date of the receiver by using the prefix letter of the serial number.

    Model 870 LETTER PREFIX
1950 TO APPROX 1968: NO SERIAL NUMBER PREFIX
1968 TO PRESENT: LETTERS USED (IN SEQUENCE)
    S-68, T-74, V-78, W-84, X-90, A-91, B-94, C-97, D-01, AB-05

If the approximate manufacture date of the receiver jives with the barrel code it is less likely that the barrel was changed.
I hope you find this helpful.
