I had a squib with my XTP loads at my last outting. I tried tapping the bullet out back the way it came using a long screwdriver bit for my drill, carefully not to hit the rifling. Well, it worked but the lead core pushed right through and out popped the core and the bottom of the copper bullet...

I've been racking my brain for days trying to figure out how to get the copper jacket out. Tonight I was looking up copper and brass rods online wondering what size I would need when it hit me. A 357/38 case is just small enough to fit down a 45 bore.

I slid a spare 357 case over the end of the screwdriver bit and slid it down the bore. Worked like a charm. I'm pretty sure I can find other cases lying around at my next range trip to fit down a 9mm, 40, and 44 dia bore. I'm going to add these to my range bags just in case. I hope someone finds this and saves themselves some headache!

Good thinking and glad you got it taken care of.

Every squib I had while experimenting with small powder charges just took a light tab to remove. They were in a revolver and the bullet was stuck right in the forcing cone though.

How far did these go down the barrel? What gun?

This was my XDm 5.25" 45. The pistol has only about 125 rounds through it and has a tight throat. The bullet only went maybe 1/2" into the lands before it stopped. The ammo was from the first batch of 45s I loaded on my pro1000 years ago and I think it was just a really light load. I had the loaded rounds packed in a baggie with 125 rounds and had 1 other squib previously. The remaining 20 or so rounds in the bag are just gonna be pulled.

Brass rod is easier on the barrel

Brass rod, brass case... Same material.

I was referring to the steel screwdriver you used.

Go buy a brass rod from Amazon, works everytime. Hardwood dowel will work in a pinch. Padded vise and hammer in the shortest direction possible to get it out.

I actually have a square Craftsman punch and a round harbor freight punch. Both have a piece of heat shrink tubing on them and fit the barrels nice but still drop through freely. I was still in the process of moving and they're packed up so I couldn't find them. Hell I've been in this house 2 months now and I'm just now getting around to building my bench top tonight so I can start unpacking reloading and shooting stuff.

Also the square file is for my 9mm barrel and the round one is for my 45 barrel. I don't know if the round one would have gotten the 45 jacket out but I think it wouldn't have cause the bullet to come apart in the first place.
