It is too bad that U.S. Senators can't be recalled but that is how the Constitution of the United States is written. What CAN be changed is to repeal the 17th Amendment, which made the election of U.S. Senators by popular vote rather than by the state legislature. This has resulted in the farce that is currently called Congress and the morass that this country finds itself mired in. It is time to amend the Constitution of the United States and REPEAL the 17th Amendment. That way, the states would have MORE control over those sent to Washington to represent THE STATE and not THE PARTY.

I don't fully agree that'd solve the problem, a legislature as leftist as what you'll find in the PRK will still choose and send statists such as finstein and boxer to the senate. And likely you'll get the same result from any other legislature with the same political proclivities. So what then has changed? You still have the same statists in government
Then add in the the racially oriented legislatures under the current political double standard of race, and you might likely compound the problem.
They are a result of the problem or a symptom, not the issue itself.
The issue is thier ability to alter at will ,via legislative or judicial action, the contract for self-government we ostensibly consented to. That being the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Thus empowering themselves and/or government, via altering the original contract, over the individual. It makes little difference who you send to represent you so long as your rights and the freedom to engage in those rights can be stripped from you via either vote or judicial decision without your bonafide consent.
So long as this 'democracy' type situation exists, which is no more than a polite term for literal mob rule, the current status-quo will continue.
End the mob rule and its ability for empowerment over the individual & things will change for the better.

How will adding a middle man help things.

Right now I choose directly who I wish to support, your option is to choose someone to choose someone to represent me.

If you want to change the status quo, don't vote for status quo politicians. Send a message by supporting the BEST candidate, not the one likely to win by party affiliation. Might take a hit once, but the message will resonate loud an clear.

You have a lot more control over who represent you in the state legislature than you do electing a Federal Senator. Who can you talk to easier, your state rep or your Fed Senator?

Going back to the intended model (changed by William Randolph Hurst because he couldn't buy a Senator) takes away out of state money. With the state legislatures ability to recall, the states would again have a check on Federal Power that has been lost.

I agree that the 17th should never have been ratified. The more direct the democracy, the worse things get.

It would also help shut all those empty-headed idiots up who keep screaming about how the Senate's apportionment is all wrong and needs to follow the same rules as the House has. The reason there are 2 Senators per state is that they're supposed to be representing their respective states, not the people. The US Senate was kind of the original UN council.

It was easier to repeal the 18th Amendment (prohibition) than the 17th will ever be.

Most everyone enjoys a good shot of alcohol, but too many people depend on their Senators to keep their welfare check coming in month after month.

I have argued for years to repeal the 17th. Not One Senator would agree, no matter their party.

Exactly! It's easier to expose corruption on the local level. The academics and elites have figured out how to manipulate mass public opinion. You as a single individual have a better shot at influencing opinion in your local state senate district than you do on a mass level.

I think shorter term limits would be more of a productive solution, don't forget the reasoning behind the 17th amendment....

Term limits accomplish nothing positive. Look at California's state-level politicians. They all have term limits. So do their local politicians. After living there a few years, I can tell you that the quality of their state and local politicians is exceedingly low and that they're by and large a bunch of fascist pieces of shit.

    Which is why I left.

Well it is California.... I wouldn't expect you'd had much of a selection worth picking from anyways.

Hell yes repeal the 17th! If you want to stop deficient spending, reduce our debt, and rein in the FED then repeal the 16th, too.

A con-con is our only hope at this point.
