Howdy all. I'm in Las Vegas right now but in a few years I will be retiring to the Abilene area. My brother just retired in Fort Worth and his wife's family is in Brownwood so they are looking for 10 acres between Brownwood and Abilene. I'm looking forward to being in Texas again. I really love Texas. Thought I'd just say that.
Where do people shoot in this area. I've done a bit of 1000 yard work but my eyes just don't do that well at 1000 anymore. I'd still like to shoot at 400/600 and really like bench work. Is there a place I can do that when I'm in the area? As soon as brother finds the property I'll come out to visit and I'll take a look at the places that I hope you folks will post here.
Anyway, I'm putting the cart before the horse but I'm still really looking forward to fish fry's and high school football again. Maybe I'll see some of you in a half dozen years or so.

I shoot at my own place, so I don't know about the local ranges.

    I assume you've visited Abilene ... LOL
Not sure I ever considered it a retirement destination before.

    At any rate ...

Tac Pro in Mingus (~1/2 between FW and Abilene) is the only "public" range that offers lanes that far that I know of even remotely close.

    Welcome to Texas!

crazy, huh? Boils down to cheap housing and great medical facilities.
That's what the transplants tell me.

    Welcome to Texas!

Thanks NTX. My brother's family is there and when I retire I want to be close to family/brother. We both want acreage so we are going in on property together. I moved to Las Vegas from Fort Worth. Frankly, I'm looking forward to a little easier going. Vegas is a mean town.
I am thrilled to know there is 1000 yards to shoot in when I'm up to it. I bet it cost a pretty penny to shoot there hah?

No personal experience at Tac Pro, just living vicariously through a friend.
The owner is an ex-Brit special forces kind of guy, who I have met and is a hoot once you get him to chatting.

I've visited Vegas ... once. That was enough.
And if truth be known, I would prefer Abilene to Vegas as well.

    LOL

Hey Vaquero, I've been reading your posts for some time now. You've helped me paint an image of the area in my mind without you even knowing it. I've been to Abilene several times and through it many times but still don't know much.
You've got my attention when you say you shoot on your own place. What's the rules about that or where can I find the rules on line. It may help us make a decision on the property we look for. I'd be in heaven if I could shoot 100 yards on my own property.

Rules, pretty much just don't let your bullets leave your property.
Usually do as you please if you have 10 acres or more and no deed restrictions.

Abilene and San Angelo Texas are great retirement destinations. They have enough population for good medical facilities. The land and housing is cheep compared to the DFW area. My wife Nd I are thinking of retiring back that way. I lived in San Angelo for ten years and our daughter is starting her career out in Abilene. The military bases out that way keep thing fresh.

Thanks twins. I love Vegas but not so much the city as I do the wide open country and the rivers and mountains but when I get older I want to close to family and I can't think of a bad thing about Abilene other than being kinda flat. Heck, I haven't eaten good BBQ in years.

Not completely flat. "Foot hills" just outside Abilene. I lived there in the early 90s. Used to ride my bike (pedal not motorized) to Buffalo Gap and Abilene State Park. Beautiful scenery. Nice small city to retire.

Mohave Tec, I hope you can meet up with Vaquero and Stainless on our lunch gatherings when you get here. He's right about shooting in the country. I've had friends who were called in on by nosy neighbors one time, the Sheriff came and met with them, saw that they were shooting safely and told them to carry on and were never bothered again. The road my place is on sounds like a war zone on the weekends and I love it. Everyone stops pretty much during deer season though. We try to out boom each other with tannerite sometimes.

With the Air base here and both of the hospitals and all of the specialist and clinics around Abilene has quietly became a retirement area over the past decade. Lots of retirement villas and the like popping up all of the time. You can see them coming out of Golden Corral after their early bird specials, standing out in front of their Cadillac wearing leisure pants picking their teeth and bitching that the soup was bad.

Thanks Hunter, I needed that. I'm an avid cyclist and motorcyclist as well. I've ridden the Hill Country many times but didn't realize it was so close to Abilene. That's great.

vmax, have ya ever heard the saying "I'll never be old enough to ride a Gold Wing"? LOL.

I'm looking forward to some stomping ground right outside my door. I'm completely at my brother's mercy as to where we buy but I don't care. It was his idea/dream and I'm just living it with him.
I'll meet up with these guys for sure if they don't quite before I get there. I'm still a few years out yet.
I like my work too but I'm getting tired of 110 mph all the time.
vmax is a fine handle. I'm not going to tell you how many of those I got around here. I'm a reloader.
