Does any of this make any sense at all?
    In general:
    • The function of the revolutionary is to overthrow the status quo. They give no thought to the future beyond that goal.
    • Pretty much all revolutions, no matter how ugly they are, are carried out by naive, well-meaning people who wind up supporting a few criminals.
    • If a revolution is successful, it will almost always be hijacked by people who didn't care about the previous regime, didn't take part in the violence, but positively do recognize an opportunity to take advantage of the confusion and accrue power to themselves.
So, yes, this does make sense. Revolutionaries of this type want to burn it all down, no matter who's running it. It's the next phases when things truly go to hell. Let's hope this shit fizzles out and we never get to those next phases.

What prompted me to reply to your post:

The stark contrast between the American Revolution and nearly all others fills me with awe to this day. Those revolutionaries actually did the fighting, thought about the future, followed through to set up a government, stuck around to see that government fail, and set up a new government that still endures. There's a reason that any educated person views the Founding Fathers as, essentially, demi-gods; they damn near were. Despite all their myriad, very human faults, they were so exceptional as a group that they were, arguably, unique in all history.

Thanks Ben for that excellent explanation. It sort of reinforces what I was thinking.
