In the Las Vegas shooting, a civilian named Joseph Wilcox drew his concealed weapon to try and stop the shooters who had killed the two cops. He was shot in the back by the female as he confronted the male suspect. Las Vegas Police have labelled him as a hero (rightfully so) who tried to stop an active shooter.

Thanks for your heroic efforts Mr. Wilcox. Rest in peace my friend.

You should read what the anti-gun trolls are saying about the Mr. Wilcox... harping about how CHL holders are useless in active shooter situations and other crap. Makes me want to throttle those a@*$^#* by the neck.

TWO professionally trained cops didn't fare any better than the armed citizen. I guess they shouldn't be allowed to own or carry guns either according to the gun grabbing commies.

In any case he put himself at risk with no duty to do so and sacrificed everything to try to save other people's lives. That's the textbook definition of a hero. So the leftwingers can snort a bag of AIDS, eat a bowl of gangrenous dicks and die in a fire. I'd trade 50 million of those worthless socialist fucks for 1 Joe Wilcox.

Thank God this guy helped to prevent what could have been a far worse situation. Every individual life loss is equally tragic, but this man sacrificed himself to keep the sum as low as possible. RIP Officers, and good citizen.

My first thought even before i heard the details. At least he delayed them and maybe ssved others. Could have been much worse without him.

Wilcox did what I would NOT have done. He was a courageous man but he's dead. Most of the time, I carry a .380 semi auto. It may only be marginal for a face to face confrontation but it's hopelessly under gunned in the situation described in this story.

Gotta admit, my own WalMart story isn't the best choice I've ever made.
Several WW employees were running after a good sized black guy and he ran down a row of cars near Bonnie & I. I told Bonnie "Watch this" as he neared me running full throttle down a line of parked cars.

When he got to me, I hit him as hard as I could and knocked him onto the hood of a car traveling down the aisle. I slowed him up enough for the WW guys to catch him. The end result? The bastards never even said "Thank you!" That's my last hero move!

Guys.....It's OK to run if you need to. A CHL holder is not a cop or a soldier and has no obligation to place himself in harms way just because he has a carry piece. Get the F outta there and live to fight another day! Bet your ass I will!

Every man has choices to make.
"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends."
Not saying I want to be a martyr though.

On a side note, my G19 is a formidable for 2 assailants if I have the jump on them, in many circumstances. However, I don't think most of us would look behind us if we saw a gunman in front of us, so it's definitely a lesson learned.

It wasn't the gun that made Joseph Robert Wilcox a hero.

That he interjected himself into the situation and tried his best to stop them is the heroic part. Here's a guy who may have been able to fight or run and decided to fight.

He had a choice to act or retreat and he acted to the best of his knowledge and abilities to do good.

Knowing the risks he may acted the same way with anything at his disposal as a weapon including threatening to throw a can of tuna.

His gun gave him a choice of what to confront these deranged folks with and it was a great choice to have on hand.

Joseph Robert Wilcox died having an option to counter deadly force used unjustly with deadly force used correctly and acted selflessly in the best interest of others.

There is a lot to be learned here that could save lives. Without detracting from Mr. Wilcox' heroism, let's look at some options..............

Our primary responsibilities as CHL holders is to get our butts OUT of a dangerous situation! If all of our escape routes are blocked, the bad guy is bringing the fight to us, we use what is probably the last seconds of our lives to draw our handgun and shoot until the issue is resolved.

I use the "wet pants" guide to drawing my pistol. If I'm not peeing my pants in fear, then that gun will NOT see the light of day!

That CHL gun does not turn us into soldiers, cops or super heroes. The CHL does not allow or encourage us to insert ourselves into dangerous situations. We are simply NOT trained for that! "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" sums this up nicely. Some of you may BE soldiers or LEO's and you are trained to handle an armed assailant. Others like me, are neither.

Wilcox may have died a hero's death but he's still dead and the reason he's dead is that he failed to obey the guidelines as explained above. Wilcox advanced on an armed subject while carrying his gun but not knowing that another armed, female subject was behind him. The second subject shot Wilcox in the back and killed him.

Further, if Wilcox had enough information about this armed criminal to justify DRAWING his weapon, he should have FIRED it! His CHL gun is not a bluff. It is a last ditch "Hail Mary" pass and nothing more. These were gross errors that cost Wilcox his life!

A cop wouldn't have advanced on the shooter like that! An LEO would have assessed the situation and called for backup! These were suicidal killers of Police Officers who would never lay down their weapons over a CHL pistol being trained on them! Wilcox didn't KNOW those things at the time but should have assumed the worst case scenario and acted accordingly. LEO training bangs this drum constantly!

Wilcox told his companion that he was going to intercede and that was his fatal, final mistake.

PLEASE....Don't fall for this hero stuff. Follow the guidelines for your CHL. Get the Hell gone, retreat if you can, then fight if you absolutely must. Being a dead hero is still DEAD!

Roger, current tactics as I understand them for LEOs now are to advance on an active shooter without backup.

It's a personal decision to intervene in a situation or leave. This guy did what he could.

We may figure out, in a time of stress, multiple things went wrong tactically for Wilcox. I'm assuming there is video. It's easy to judge the situation as an armchair quarterback. His intent was one of a hero for me though.

Wilcox still stepped over the line of CHL holder responsibilities and duties and into the realm of an LEO. That cost him his life.

He broke nearly every rule regarding carrying a CHL pistol. We should all learn from that and it may save some lives.

I have no desire to die prematurely, I have no desire to be a hero, and I don't know what I would do in the situation Mr. Wilcox found himself in. But as I read this thread I recalled a saying:

"The only thing necessary for evil men to prevail, is for good men to do nothing"

Mr. Wilcox did something (attempted to), and evil people did no further damage that day.

I do not think I would call his actions heroic, more stupid.

His Situational Awareness was near zero. His tactics non-existent. He did almost nothing, except get shot. He got ZERO shots off. He did nothing to slow down or prevent the events from unfolding.

The dead cops families will get lifetime pensions, college funds, and the like. Wilcox family will get nothing, except bills.
