Rock Island GI 45, What Mags Work Best

Just brought home a new Rock Island GI 45. It came with one ACT 8 round mag that would not lock up. I had to shave some of the plastic floor plate tab to get it to fit and lock up. Mags for my R1 do not lock up at all. I have some Brownells that will lock up if you slap them hard enough.

Any RI owners use other brands that will lock up and function correctly?

Send it back to Rock Island.

Use METALFORM mags. I spoke with Arlen (spelling?) at Armscor Nevada about just that. He said with all the mag malfunctions, the ended up using the Metalform as the most reliable mags. I had a few gliches with my 9mm FS Tactical with other brands as well. The Metalform are 100% so far.


This is a newer pistol, 10-+ months, some other mags might do well with older pistols.

If the pistol won't work with factory mags, it needs to go back to the manufacturer.

The problem with the ACT 8 rounder was the mag, not the gun. After removing some of the plastic floor plate it locks up fine. It's a cheap Italian mag.

Agreed, but, if I bought a new gun that included a mag, that mag should fit and work.
