Home owners insurance just shot way up so I started shopping around, only to find everyone else is a lot higher, with two refusing to insure due to the age of my roof. It’s ready to be replaced anyway, and it would just about half my premium if replaced, so we started getting bids. Some were seemless, but others really pushed on me to file on insurance for hail damage. Almost insistent. What’s the angle there? Something just doesn’t seem right with that. Is there extra money in it for roofers on an insurance claim versus me just paying for it? My deductible is well over half the price of the roof, so I just don’t see the benefit of dinging my claims history over a few grand. The roof is over 20 years old that I know of so it would be replaced regardless... Any thoughts on this?

We went through almost the same thing when we wanted to replace ours. We went with a metal roof but even that roofer first told us we could file a claim and he would help with it. We said no for the same reason as you and got our metal roof.

I have no idea, but it just seems kind of shady on the part of the roofers wanting you to submit a claim. Maybe in some way they are getting more money in the end. Just doesn't sound legit to me.

We all pay for that. Wasn’t aware of the loopholes, thanks for sharing that..
Yessir, they will claim decking damage because you can’t see until they pull shingles. They can just send pictures of any roof.

During “Covid” Insurance companies weren’t even going out and relying on contractors to do inspections. Needless to say every roof they checked needed to be replaced and for top dollar. A lot of money was paid out for nothing in some cases.

Generally speaking, a claim on your homeowners will have a deductible of 5% of the replacement value of the home. The scam/fraud is the roofer will sell you on refunding the deductible to you by upcharging the insurer and leaving you with a substandard product that comes with a 20-year warranty so long as the installer is an approved installer. Good luck verifying that as the roofer will sub out the labor and you’re up a creek without a paddle.

From an insurance perspective, the roof is beyond it’s life limit, so they’re pricing that risk into your premium. Ask your insurer if there’s a premium breakpoint for a particular roofing product or system. Some insurers have a significant breakpoint for GAF products installed by a master elite certified roofer.

Exactly correct, roofers also have left over shingles from jobs. They sit in a storage until they get a whole roof worth. Unfortunately by that time shingles are aged so a roof can be 2 years old even though it was just installed.

Good stuff, glad I posted. Two of the companies didn’t push it. They just asked once if insurance claim. We said no, and it was not brought up again. They were also the best quotes btw
I would go with them especially if it’s a local establishment. Those companies usually have and honor warranty. They also care about customer relationships and that’s important.

Ask if they use synthetic underlayment, most do now. It’s a way better product that will protect your house better than tar paper.
