I tried logging at first but it got too tedious

when buying a used handgun, outside of appearance, only 2 things should be judged

    1) Rails - gotta make sure the rails on a anodized/parkerized/cerakoted/whatever are not excessively worn (coating worn or worse, bare and shiny).

    2) Barrel. obviously preferred clean and good rifling, although it can be replaced.

Controls, internals, springs etc can (and eventually should) be replaced.

more or less the same for long guns, need to inspect the action and/or receiver. Basically the serialized part and the expensive parts

Another thing to think about on round counts. Most people shoot less than 500 rounds a year( probably less than 200 rounds a year)
If someone is selling a gun they bought a year ago, it probably has a round count lower than the manufacturer's reccomended break in count.

I have only "worn out" one gun.
A 10/22 that I have had over 20 years and ran over 300,000 rounds through.

I have a thread on it in the rimfire section.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't keep count, but I do see we have a couple of spreadsheet folks who appear to have more time on their hands than I do.

On mine, they're either new and unfired, which doesn't last long, or broken in. When buying used, I've never really looked at the round count because I doubt it's accurate anyway.

No way to know round counts on used guns....out of 200 + guns I have only kept a round count on 1.

Holy crap, so what went bad? The barrel threading or was it something else?

As far as round counts, I have a good estimate for the 4 guns I own.

My Glock 43 EDC.. I've put nearly 3000 rounds through as of this month.

My 12 gauge has about 80 rounds through it.

My AR 5.56 has about 800 rounds through it.

My 22LR 715t has somewhere between 1000 and 1500 rounds through it.

I don't plan on selling them. I clean them and make sure they function for me.

I suppose I'd be more conscientious about it if I had a rifle with a barrel-burner round. The closest thing I've got to that is a .243 that I might put 50 rounds through in a year. I could see tracking round count on something like a target rifle in 6.5x.284. Realistically, I might shoot ~4000 to 5000 rounds a year mostly through a bunch of different pistols so I doubt I'd shoot more than 1000 rounds through any of them per year and I think they'd last such a long time I don't worry about it.

If selling a gun, it is always NIB unfired, no matter how much I have shot it.

If buying a used gun it is always a shot-out POS that I am willing to take for a small sum as a favor.

The way I look at it, if you know your round count, you don't own Enough guns! :)
