Ruger make wonderful revolvers. I have 5 single actions. 357 NM Blackhawk 7.5", 45colt Vaquero 4 5/8" (fun little gun), Accusport Blawkhawk SS convertible 5.5" 45colt/45acp, Accusport Blackhawk SS 45colt, and my latest Blackhawk an old model 3 screw in, what else 45colt with the rare 4 5/8" barrel.
Yes, I am quite fond of the 45colt or long colt. It is THE single action caliber; old, versatile, powerful.
The 44mag is weak in comparison. Nothing hits like 350grains of lead, zipping along a supersonic speeds. Let's go shoot some.

    Hmmm...

    .45LC
    Bullet weight/type Velocity Energy
    255 gr Lead SWC 961 ft/s 523 ft·lbf
    200 gr XTP 1,032 ft/s 473 ft·lbf
    230 gr XTP 969 ft/s 480 ft·lbf
    250 gr XTP 929 ft/s 479 ft·lbf
    (7.5" test barrel)

Not bad. Edges out typical .45ACP if memory serves.

    .44mag
    Bullet weight/type Velocity Energy
    180 gr JSP 1,610 ft/s (490 m/s) 1,036 ft·lbf
    240 gr SP 1,180 ft/s (360 m/s) 741 ft·lbf
    240 gr JHP 1,542 ft/s 1,267 ft·lbf
    (4" test barrel)

A tad more energetic than .45LC.

Not saying that .45LC is weak or ineffective - it certainly served outlaw, lawman, and cattleman alike just fine in the late 19th century and someone carrying a .45LC revolver is not necessarily under-armed.

Speaking of, I will own a .45LC single-action revolver someday. If not a Ruger of some flavor, then some 1873 Army Single Action or a Colt Peacemaker replica.

I like the single action for it's versatility in calibers. Here's my .30 carbine:

I like the single action for it's versatality. Here is my lightly modified .30 carbine: It's a decent hog gun out to 50 yds.

"oh that is SWEET!!!!love the grips.
    pete"

Thanks for the kind words. I am currently on the lookout for a sister grip to put on my .41 mag. I got those on Ebay, and there was no reference to maker. I also got the vent rib on Ebay and I like the way it changes the profile. Never been a big fan of the huge front sight blade on the Rugers and the rib kind of cleans it up.

Idleprocess, Those were Colt and reproduction loads; that you posted.
I'll postup some "Ruger Only" loads in little while that are a TAD more energetic than the 44mag. Which by the way, is also a great round.
Something along the lines of a "300gr" bullet moving at 1500fps or a "350gr" er moving at 1200fps (the elephant stomper)
ps. I just reread my post from late last nite and I didn't mean to call the 44mag weak. I was alittle sleepy.

the .429 mag (44 mag) just can't come close to the power of the 45 colt in a ruger or t/c .while I don't push my ruger only loads its nice to know that I can.

Yeah ... those sound more like .454Casull loads. Dandy for revolvers built to handle it, but like +P+ in pistols, better not chamber them unless you're SURE your weapon can handle it.

I love the black hawk best shooting gun i have shot in a long time. the one I shot was a 44 mag, and that thing would dot an I at 15 yards. wish it had been mine. but it belonged to my nephue and he took me to the range we shot the 44 mag and about 5 other guns. but he and my son both shot the 44 one or two times and left it for me to shoot, full mag loads and it kicked to much for them. I loved it.
have shot the secureity six also and it is a good revolver easy to shoot and it hits where you put it.
    they make a great gun.:p

I like Ruger's single actions. My safe has a New Model Blackhawk .357 Mag. and a Single-six .22. Great guns both of them. For DA I prefer S&W or Colt.

There is already a .357 UltraMag along with a .44 UltraMag. They were developed in between the introductions of the .357 Maximum and .445 SuperMag in the 80's. The .44 was the subject of an article in Guns & Ammo magazine, I believe. The .357 is based on the 5.6x50R case and the .44 is a cut down .30-40 Krag; both have a case length of 1.75" and only fit the T/C Contender and Dan Wesson SuperMag.
