rust specks

Recently, I've noticed rust specks on my truck near the tailgate and right rear fender on the outside. Any ideas how i could have gotten them and how to get rid of them?

When I lived on the Gulf Coast we regularly had the undersides and fenders oil sprayed. That is, vehicles that were not undercoated with that factory tar stuff.
Salt water and salt spray plays hell with fenders, bottom of doors and etc.
