I dropped by the local Academy today to handle the merchandise and pickup some ammo. I saw that they will be offering the S&W M&P 15 Sport II for $599 starting 10/18. This will include a $100 Academy gift card and ~$40 worth of S&W Merchandise (a bag and hat, so realistically $4 in S&W Merchandise).

Just wanted to spread the news.

So it's actually $495 with a kick back to buy an ammo, optic, cleaning kit, and or some targets.

What makes the rifle a "Sport 2"? I have a nice MP15 hanging in the garage.

Pretty much but I can turn that $100 gift card over to the better half for Christmas shopping so it's a win-win. :)

The Sport II comes with a dust cover and forward assist, I'm not sure what else is different.

Damn, I remember rushing out and paying double that for the original probably 8 years ago, and damn happy I found it, lol.

It's a good time to buy ARs. I haven't priced .223/5.56 ammo in a while so I was surprised to see it's still up there for retail. I suppose the days of it being cheap are gone but at least it's plentiful.

I think it has a different barrel twist too. 1:9 instead of the original 5R 1:8 rifling.

There is cheaper, but my last order that will be arriving Monday, I paid $165 for 500 rounds of PMC X-TAC 62gr 5.56.

I think i paid $399 for 1000 rounds of xtac and 10 pmags

time before that I think I paid 430 for 1000 rounds of xtac from sportsman guide, which was the best price (for xtac) at the time

might as well get the Ruger AR-556 MPR for $560 if you're looking for an entry level AR-15, the price difference is EASILY justified if you look at the specs. Or if you care about long lasting quality and want something you can trust your life with, get the Colt LE6920 with Centurion CMR FF handguard for around $700 shipped here: https://www.gunsmidwest.com/colt-le6920-r-trooper-5-56-16-30-blk.html

I did search many sites, I also bought other ammo, so out of not breaking myself I settled for 500. If I remember rightly I think I would have saved another penny a round had I gotten 1000.

Hey you can't just be going around making me spend money now. I just got a rifle last week. Oh the temptation.
I would just buy it and think of it as an investment. Colt LE6920s hold their value well, assuming you take care of the gun. They got name recognition so to speak. The regular basic LE6920s cost $800, this one comes with a $200 handguard and is only $700 dollars. The core rifle is the LE6920. You can take off the centurion handguard and sell it and come out way ahead.

Those are definitely options too. I just wanted to share what I had found out today.

I had a 6920 Magpul edition that I liked quite a bit. I traded it when I moved to California for a few years. Thanks for sharing that link for the Trooper, that is a good price.

For effectively $499, the S&W M&P is still not a bad rifle considering that price comes with a rifle you don't have to do anything to.

Where is the MPR selling for $560?

These guys ship out faster than sportsman outdoors and free shipping. They got my gun to my FFL here in Houston in 48 hours.

If you're set on a sport II, you can get it for less than $450. They go on sale regularly for less than that. I bought mine for $440 dollars at the end of August. I ended up selling it for $500 dollars on Armslist, just so I can buy the Colt trooper and the Ruger MPR.

Hopefully it stays that price for a couple more weeks. I'll probably jump on it.

Thanks. Though I had been leaning toward the MPR, I am back to wanting a 16" with fixed A2 sight. I'm not set on the M&P but the price point is what I want to be hitting. I'd love a 6920 again but I'm trying to keep it around that price. For my purposes, it'd be fine.

Most likely will. It's been sitting around $700 on most online retailer websites for a couple of months now. Most folks doesn't know about this new LE6920 model that came out a few month ago. I suspect this is an introductory price by Colt, hard to imagine why they'd slap on a $200 handguard while also reducing the price.
