So I decided to give myself a day off to try out a few different loads. I wanted to do some comparisons with mag vs std primers as well as trying out a new hunting load. It was off to a bad start when I found my target stand lying in an ant pile. I propped it up and pulled the ant saturated cardboard off the 2x4 slats. It was still teeming with them so I endured about a dozen bites as they flew off from stapling on the new cardboard.

When I get back to the bench or what's left of it, I realized I could really use a new top for it. I set up the chronograph and off I go! I start placing my bags and realized I forgot my nicer ones in the truck. So I make due with the smaller ones I keep there made from old blue jeans. It's a rickety setup but I was determined to make it work. At first there are no surprises as I work up through a load range in my Howa. Predictable results and not running anything too warm I was satisfied with a few groups.

Moved on to an AR 10 and at least seeing less case head swipes with the lower range of charges. From there, on to the 280 hunting load(139gr btsp). I ran threw some rounds ranging from 45-46 gr IMR4831 seeing similar accuracy to my RL19 load. Actually had about 50 more fps at max and no pressure signs. All good stuff.

So I move on to my next 308 load using TAC. 175gr SMKs with starting load at 41.5gr. shoot off three and they felt a little warm. I click over to a new string and didn't give it much thought. Next string feels way warmer. I decided look at the results and it averaged 2810 fps! Which would be great if I had a 30" barrel. The Howa is a 20"! Anyhow I felt only the tiniest but if stiffness in the bolt lift so I decided to fire one from the 42.5 load. 2818 fps and a blown primer is what I got.

When making these I remember dropping powder separately for each charge weight so I grabbed 1 round from the other batch using magnum primers but back at the starting load of 41.5gr. Heavy recoil and a super sticky bolt. That one was 2742 fps with another blown primer. Decided I had pushed my luck enough and moved on to some other loads.

I did have a few good takeaways seeing better results with magnum primers and BLC2 which I was hoping for. Also had a pair of .67" 3 shot groups. The 150gr load was over 1.5" in my AR10 but that's par for that gun. Overall just happy to live to shoot another day. Some bullet pulling is definitely in order as I really need to see where I goofed.

I'm guessing the scale slipped one notch up on the heavier weight to 45gr and I was adding from there on the lighter weight. So my 42gr load was probably 47. I walked away with no damage to the rifle, both eyes all fingers so it was still a good trip. Since hunting season is over, it's time for a new bench top(an old door)and some new 2x4s on the 100yd target. I'll update after I pull the bullets. I did confirm @Mills load was safe so I'll bump the 150s up to 45gr but the 175 SMKs are liking the BLC2 almost as much as my old RL15 load.

I've put down some sub 1/2" 5 shot groups with RL15 but it's not out there to be had at any reasonable price. I have a mountain of TAC so I'm really hoping to get that load dialed in. Also noteworthy, the 30 year old CCI primers I recently traded for all went off without a hiccup.

Well the verdict is in...I'm guilty of overcharging them by a full 5 grains of powder. I just pulled 8 and sure enough all exactly 5 gr over intended charges. I'm sure it was one clumsy bump of the scale and the larger weight hopped a tooth over from 40 to 45. I'll be watching it like a hawk now. Another great reason to choose a powder with perfect load density. I don't think I could have pulled it off with IMR4064 but with the TAC there's plenty of room in that case.

Sad part is, I just started developing this load before moving to a dispenser scale. I got a nice electronic dispenser scale but figured I get better QC from the old school one. Lesson learned and luckily one that didn't cost me any appendages! It does make me confident in that Howa though. No freaky damage, just a sticky bolt and case head swipes. The lower charges that sat at 46.5 didn't even blow primers.

And just for everyone's info, you can get 2800 fps from a 20" barrel and 175gr SMKs, you just have to gamble with fate! I'm expecting the rethrown charges to produce about 2550-2600 fps. Might get a little more life out of my brass that way.

Yes sir. Looking at the hodgon load data again, 43.4 was max with the 175gr SMK. So the hottest was a full 4.1 gr over max. Even the lightest load was 3.1 over. I do see why some aren't scared to push the limits a bit. An old hunting buddies loads were always a half grain or so over max. At least I'm confident to work up now that I've already found the ceiling.
