    Hello,

I haven't kept up with optics in years.

MY Kid, the USMC MP, now a Police Detective & weapons guy put a little electric red dot job with no magnification on my AR. good news was that I finally got MY AR back from him him after over a decade of him "borrowing it" He had mercy, and re-built it for me.

I also have an old stainless Mini-14, to use as a plinker & backup home protector. We are moving to the "country" soon, to live on several acres of our rural property.

As I am 75, I can't even see the Iron sights.

I'd like a cheap, durable long eye relief, low mag, 2 or 3X, fixed scope for it, and have no idea where to start.

The receiver is not drilled & tapped yet.

What would those of you knowledgeable suggest for this use?

Or, should I put the rinky-dink from the AR on the Mini-14, and start over with my AR, #1 protection rifle? Or, perhaps try to swap the Ruger for one which is already scope-prepared?

    Please advise,

    AimPoint Pro red dot.

Is this rifle the ranch? Or the regular. The Ranch has divets for scope rings. The regular has the A2 looking sight?

Is the heat guard on top the barrel metal? Or plastic?

    You said "cheap and durable"
    You usually cannot have both

I have an older 185 series Mini 14. There really is no good way to mount a scope on it. I did find a good mount for a red dot though. The Amega Mini Scout replaces the upper hand guard and is perfect for a red dot such as the Sig Sauer Romeo 5, or Primary Arms MD-ADS.
