I recently bought an Athlon Argos BTR 8-34x56 rifle scope for $360. For my choices of reasonably priced scopes I have been a big fan of Vortex, but recently I had heard a lot about Athlon. Now I know that many will jump on the fact that it's made in China, but after reading a lot of reviews and doing a bit of research, I decided that for $360 I would give it a try.

To be honest, I'm quite impressed with the Athlon's performance. With the many Vortex scopes I have one difference I can tell is there is a greenish hue with the Vortex that I don't see with the Athlon, not to say that that is good or bad, just that it's noticeable. The clarity is every bit on par with the Vortex, even the Viper. I put it on it's strongest power and even then, at least at 200 yards, it's seemed very clear and quite easily able to count the holes in the target I made with my 22-250.

Now I'm not trying to put down Vortex, I still like them quite well, but the size of this Athlon scope could have easily costed twice as much had I gone with Vortex.
Sounds like a good scope. I recently conducted a scope experiment myself. I put a $300 Sightmark Citadel 4 - 16 X 50 on my Savage 308. I was planning to hold out and get a Vortex or maybe another Nightforce, but my favorite Odessa gun store made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. They needed someone to test a new product they had just started carrying, and made me a “satisfaction guaranteed” offer. If I liked it, the price was $300, if not, just bring it back. I am happy to report that I now own a Sightmark scope. Good clear glass, illuminated mil-dot reticle, and large zero stop turrets.

I have a buddy I work with. He is getting ready to buy a Savage Stealth. He asked me for a scope recommendation for $800 max. That puts him in the Burris range IMHO. But that's all I know. I'm not very familiar with the other brands. I highly value ya'lls opinion. What would ya'll choose at $800?

He's going to want a BDC reticle. He will not be shooting dope.
MOA or MILS. It doesn't matter.
    It's for a 6.5CM

    Thank you

I went with Leupold vx5hd CDS. Once he sights it in he can get his FPS, scope height, ammo, etc send in to Leupold and they will make him a custom dial for that specific ammo out to 1000+ yards for free. May be bit over 800 unless he buys used but it’s a really nice set up and great glass too for low light. I use for hunting.

Cabelas has the Nikon Black on sale for $200 off right now. You can get the Nikon Black x1000 6x24x50 for $449. This is a great bang for the buck scope Or you can get the newer model for $599

Nikon scopes are pretty good but they're not going to make them anymore. They're getting out of the scope business. They have always been stingy on their warrantees. Athlon and Vortex are pretty good. SWFA is good and will stand for their products. Bushnell makes some great top line stuff but I'm not so sure about their cheaper stuff.
Midway has a sale of Athlon Ares BTR 2.5-15X50 I scopes for $399. The one I bought is great glass but the turrets are mushy. Probably why they're on sale but it's great ED HD glass pretty cheap.

I really hate that Nikon is getting out of the scope business. They always made decent products. Their warrantee was always a little iffy though. The Black line showed a lot of promise but they just quit the game.

I have that one on my 22-250, it works great for me. Rarely use the lighted reticle.
