I havent studied a lot of the questions around how and why 9/11 happened and who was connected to those directly responsible and im not a 9/11 "truther".

That being said, our gov is holding back a lot of info about who knew what and when, who and what countries were involved and why some people were allowed to be in and operate in this country then allowed to escape.

Means, Opportunity, and Motive.

The Saudis had the means (wealth) and opportunity (diplomatic relations and easy entry into the USA).

Motive?

The Saudis depend on us to protect their oil wealth, both in the Kingdom and on high seas shipping routes.

Bin Laden openly called for the overthrow of the House of Saud after the King invited American Armed Forces into the kingdom to kick the Iraqis out of Kuwait (1990-1991).

The Saudis "disowned" Bin Ladin, pulled his passport, and forced him into exile.

Clinton refused to grab Bin Ladin when he was offered up by Sudan.

The Saudis fear a nuclear Iran, and Al Qaida had contacts with Teheran, despite the Shia/Sunni Split.

So ... back to Motive:

Saudi Arabia does not have the "global reach" of the USA. So, they concocted a plot that would be "endorsed" and "pinned" on Bin Laden, knowing the USA would pursue him to the ends of the earth, kill him and his movement, and thereby save the House of Saud.

It is quite Machiavellian, but in the end the House of Saud still stands despite the "unfortunate collateral damage" suffered by their "closest" ally.

No surprises here. Should have been common knowledge if it wasn't for the people calling anyone who spouted this 8+ years ago a tin foil hat wearer. Hopefully more behind the scenes details of 9-11 come out into the mainstream soon.
