There is a oft used statistic by the left being thrown about by both President Obama and just about anyone who thinks they must do battle with the NRA or those that support the 2nd Amendment. That stat is that 40% of gun sales in America are done without a background check. Immediately upon hearing such numbers, and being gun owners ourselves it certainly struck us as highly unlikely.
And President Obama along with most liberals like to cite gun shows as the main source of these undocumented, no background check sales. However, if you have ever been to a gun show and have actually watch what goes on, there aren't too many people walking out of them that haven't had a background check on their purchase. If you purchase a gun from a licensed dealer at a gun show, you cannot make that purchase without have a background check done unless you have a concealed carry permit which would have already required you get training and an an extensive background check. And if you watch, you will see that there are people at nearly every table filling out paperwork for background checks. That's how this works. There is no way 40% of the sales at a gun show are from private dealers. That is just not happening.
So, this past week, President Obama twice used the questionable statistic twice, once on Twitter and once at a speech in the White House on gun safety. They are below:

The only problem with President Obama supposed FACT is that it comes from a study that is nearly 20 years old and was conducted by telephone with a sample of, get this, 251 people. And when respondents were asked whether they bought from a licensed dealer the possible answers included “probably was/think so” and “probably not.” Being that the response level was on 50%, there were only 251 people surveyed and the nature of the questions, the possibility of gross widespread error is highly likely.
This is not a study that the President should even be using because it is not even really a study, it is a survey that is 19 years old and gun laws and enforcement of those laws have changed in the preceding 2 decades. It is also laughable that Obama just simply cherry picked such a survey to support his position when this one presents the possibility of such a huge margin of error.
It is laughable that liberals and President Obama boldly use a survey of 251 people to justify the need for universal background checks when the facts just don't back it up. But isn't that how liberals operate. It is a sound bite that President Obama used, it was picked up by the liberal media and now every progressive liberal on Facebook and Twitter cites it as fact. The fact is, President Obama could have done his research on such a dubious statistic, but he didn't because it fit his agenda too well.
