I recently purchased a SigPro SP2022 from Academy Sports for $499.99 (never found a Sig for around $500 before). Bought it almost sight unseen. I haven't taken her to the range yet, but I have disassembled, cleaned and oiled it (as per the Sig website). I have noticed that the feed ramp seems to not like to feed the 147 grain Hornady TAP that I currently have in it (all that Academy had for SD ammo). The feed ramp now has a layer of copper on it. However, when cycled, the ammo does feed properly. Also, when I cycle ammo through it, the magazine seems to wiggle...is that supposed to happen? Anyone else have a SigPro SP2022 and can comment on how they like it?

Here's where I have to say, whoa, whoa, whoa.......

You haven't fired the gun yet right?

You have copper fouling on the feed ramp?

    It doesn't like Hornday TAP?

Can you help us understand how # 2 and #3 are possible? If you say you've been "hand cycling" so much that it's got copper on the feed ramp, be ready for some razzing.

You need to actually shoot the gun to see how it'll like certain ammo and if indeed it has any feeding issues.

Does Sig not recommend wearing it in with standard factory ball nose ammo first?

+1 You need to actually fire the pistol to see what she will eat and usually sigs with the exception of the mosquito will eat anything

    clarification

Let me clarify a little... I hand cycled through exactly 16 rounds. That was enough to find out if the first failure to feed was my fault or the fault of the gun. It was my fault. I was riding the slide.

I thought it strange that copper would already become noticeable on the feedramp after only 16 rounds had been cycled through it. I understand that I really won't know if it will feed Hornady 147 grain TAP until I take it to the range and shoot about 50-200 rounds of that ammo through it. Sig did not say that the gun required a break-in period in the manual, however I will do some break-in with FMJ (115 and 124 grain). Once I know it works, I will use it as my primary home defense gun, as it comes with SigLight night sites from the factory.

Who else sells a 9mm hi-cap handgun with nightsights for $500? No one but Sig, so far as I can tell...

I have a Sp2022 and like it a lot. The magazines do seem to have a little play but it doesn't interfere with functionality. So far I have only shot ball and it has done fine. I have seen the copper transfer you have described and it cleans off. No big deal. Once you have a chance to fire it with your preferred ammo than you will know if it will function. My guess is you are unlikely to have a problem.

I just changed the grip out on my SP2022 from the medium one that it came with for the large one with the rubberish grip. I really like the way it fills out my hand more...the medium grip seemed too thin (I really like the Beretta 92 grip...even though I have smallish hands) and didn't arch enough at the bottom. I was lucky and got the extra grip off Ebay for under $20 shipped.

However, getting the old grip off was hard...the tab you're supposed to depress to remove it is very badly located to get the required leverage to get it to depress enough to remove the grip. I had to use the hasp end of an open padlock to get the grip off. After that, getting the other grip on was easy. The spare grip doesn't have a lanyard loop like the medium one...but I dont' think I'll miss it.

You might not want to hand cycle rounds through very often like that. Especially more expensive self defense ammo. If you chamber a round multiple times (especially one that doesn't have a crimp on the brass) it can and will cause bullet setback. If the bullet gets set back enough, it can cause drastically increased muzzle pressure which can do very bad things like blow guns up. ;)

As far as the "copper" thing goes, I'm not sure about Sig Pro's specifically but, quite a few manufacturers use a bronze colored (think it's copper based) lubricant or anti corrosive grease on their guns from the factory. I've seen plenty of Glocks, H&K's, and quite a few other guns that have this stuff when you buy them new. Anyways, it's possible that could be the copper color. Just a thought.

I am aware of the problems with cycling through high-end hollowpoints and the bullet setback that can occur. This box of 147 grain TAP will next be cycled through at the range during firing, to confirm that the Sig will cycle the ammo. Then, I will purchase more and not cycle it through again. The new box(es) will be kept for SD use (unless I can find some 124 grain or 147 grain HST or 50 round boxes of 124 grain Gold Dot for less than $30 online...anyone?). I'm only trying out 147 grain TAP because that's all I can find here where I live (lots of it on the shelf at Academy and the only hollowpoint they sell).

I have a new Sig 2022 and I like it alot. Took it to the range this weekend and shot a box through it. The first 15 rounds were all over the place. The last 25 went where I wanted them to. Nice shooting gun, seems to get better with time. Still likely need some more break-in time. But its my 2nd Sig, and I am a fan. The mags seem a little pricey. Found some at $38 (Midway), so if you know some cheaper leave a reply here.

You will love your new Sig. They will eat most anything you want to feed them. As for ammo, try online at ammo to go in Brenham. They just received some Hornady Critical Defense along with most anything else you might want or need.

I've got a SP2022 and like it quite a bit. I've never shot Hornday ammo through it, but have shot other 147grain bullets with no problem. I have noticed some odd behavior when hand cycling snap caps, but never had a feed problem when actually shooting the gun. Just get out there and shoot it!

If you take a thin flat head screwdriver and slip it between the bottom of the grip tab and the frame hole...you can apply a slight bit of pressure to simply release the tab. once started the grip will of course slip right off. Removing the grip was a B#### before I figured this out.

The sig pro rocks. Have fired over 1000 rounds of ammo with not one failure to feed or failure to eject. Tried white box, CCI, federal, monarch, hollow points, hornadys...you name it. For the range the cheap $11.00 a box monarch seemed to leave the least amount of residue. BTW I clean it thoroughly and oil it (lightly) immediately after I get back from the range.
Someone may have already posted that cdnn sports has this gun on sale for $399.99. That's with 2 grips, lock, brushes and night sights.
