I don't think it's a "dead" round, but with the FBI and a number of LE agencies moving to the 9mm, it won't be as common as it once was...

.40 here too. Taking advantage of great pricing on both guns and ammo these days. I guess in the near future we could see the caliber being dropped by some gun manufacturers but I don't see ammo availability going away anytime soon.
But honestly, If I didn't have any 40 today, I don't think I would be getting into it at this point.

That idea was the jest of an article I read in the American Rifleman back in 2011 (I think). They were alluding to the fact the 40 was more-or-less introduced as stop gap measure to meet complaints from law enforcement (from FBI?, if I recall correctly). Anyway, as I recall the premise of the article didn't paint a very rosy picture for it's long term prospects. If you buy into that idea (& who can truly predict the future), my guess would be that it would follow a path, not unlike the 16-ga shotgun shell: you can still buy the ammo but it ain't cheap and available selection is pretty limited. I actually thought that would happen to the 45 after the (U.S.) military went with the 9mm Beretta back in 1985. So much for my predictive capabilities....

I own two .40 S&W pistols, an RIA Tactical mid-size 1911 and an SA XD40. Both are excellent weapons and fun to shoot.

I carry a Glock 27, would like to have a HK VP40. I like the round fine. There is a lotta hate for .40 though. It's the Ginger of the ammo world.

    I want a VP40 and a VP9. I look at 9mm like many look at the .40. I don't like it. I tolerate it and own a few.

    I own and shoot 40s.

Two reasons I see for their excessive availability right now.

I believe during the last few ammo crunches 40 was still available so people bought guns for it. Those are hitting the used market.

Police trade ins are more common since many are going back to 9mm.

I've been thinking about picking up another Mod 2 in 40 only because there are so many out there. I don't dislike the round, just never got into it.
