During WWI guns went through numerous innovations for various uses. When Remington made this piece am sure it was not really for an offensive weapon.
The Remington Mark III was intended to be used as a flare pistol in the trenches of the Western Front in 1918.
This particular pistol belonged to my grandfather and used in France. He was with the US Army Ordnance Corps as a "balloonist observer/spotter" on the "front" trenches. He had some colorful experiences he told me about.
The Mark III is chambered in 10 gauge 3 inch. He said it was NOT a good thing to use with regular shot shells but was a great flare launcher. He dis say that some soldiers used 10 gauge shells with the shot dumped out and filled with sand or dirt for close range in trench combat. Damn ugly cylinder bore blaster... he called it.
This is exactly as it was given to me.
With a 10 gauge shell with the shot removed and a wad of paper, the muzzle blast is let's say quite startling. John

That's a great piece of history with personal ties you have there.

And to think a Taurus Judge only fires little 410 shells with a much larger grip.

The gangster Bugsy Segal was seen to wear two of these in shoulder holsters. At close range even with light loads it could be devastating. I know firing a "blank" round made ears ring!
