    Just a wild ass guess, hiring standards have significantly gone south when cops started to quit or retire early in recent years.

    Actually, I think the standards went south a decade (or more) ago in some Democratic Party strongholds. I remember being in DC a few years after they eased up on the criminal background bit - give them another chance, right?

    There were police working security for dealers, providing intel on police raids, carrying out hits for dealers, ripping off one dealer and selling the drugs to another, and even straight out dealing themselves. If memory serves, they even killed a fellow officer. It took an FBI investigation to finally bring them down.
